Why can't the band director at Cherokee ever be as inventive as Volunteer? I am a parent of Cherokee students and they have never had a band to even compare. Not saying they aren't good kids, the responsibilty lies on the director. The flag girls need new uniforms too.... SERIOUSLY!

its probably because the upper end of the county has some decent kids and more money invested and more parent involvement. look what hes working with on the lower end. shitty kids, even shittier parents, and less money.

What is the purpose of marching bands? Just for football games, right? Wouldn't a proper music program here students are exposed to the rich history of music and learn to not just perform, but write music as well serve a better learning purpose?

Both schools have the same amount to spend on the band, and have equal. It's more of the kids than the director.

The marching band does a lot of different stuff than just football games. And yes, they do learn to write.I'm in it,and I've written multiple pieces.

I think Cherokee has a great marching band. The kids work very hard to make the band what it is.I am very proud of what they do.They got superior ratings in all caterory in their marching competation last year.So they do more than play at football games.

The VHS show Friday night was awesome. CHS had a great show too. The parents and fans really support VHS's band. If you take away the VHS band parents, the stands for VHS would be empty. VHS fans should be thankful for the band because the band is why people still attend VHS games. VHS has the better band program while CHS has the better football program. Either way, a football game without a band, just isnt the same.

Exactly. Both bands are good,VHS just has more support. And I don't mean this in a bad way, but, band is really the only thing VHS is good at

Alright, first of all, the post was about Cherokee High Band, not Volunteer. Although they're always compared, this person obviously wants to focus on Cherokee only. But, for the sake of the direction of conversation, I'll throw Volunteer in. Their feeder/band booster organization tops Cherokee's 20 times over. Their amount of instructors is, of course, triple what Cherokee has. Over half of Cherokee's band are either freshmen or new members. That being said, I commend Cherokee for pulling something together that shouldn't. They work harder than most bands mainly because they HAVE to in order to even have a band.
Yes, of course there's more to band than football games. Like competition, leadership development, expansion of the analytical part of the brain, musical understanding, a place of belonging, talent - which leads to scholarships - which leads to free rides in education... the list goes on (and on and on).
As for their show, it's getting there.
And "They Are", your comment just cracks me up.
Finally, to wrap this up and get this post back on track.. for those of you with a history of the band, do you think it's improved or declined?

Volunteer's band is superb! I really enjoy thier Drumline. I personally wish that the "Marching Chiefs" would be on that level. But, I blame the director not the band members. I have spoken to him numerous times and he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer! I can say this because I have a master's degree. Good luck to both bands and both football programs the rest of the year! All 4 of them are from Hawkins County....

Umm I got to volunteer and we don't get any money at all. Cherokee is definately favored in this county. We don't even have enough books in my class, so no one can study at home!!!

My class doesn't either. Both schools have the money, they choose not to spend it.And we dont fundraise at all,so that's another bad thing

"vhs student", you charge a band fee. We don't. Are you in band, or only commenting on the status of the school as a whole? either way, as of the book situation, we're the same.

It would probably help the band tremendously if they could get a good moral person to help those kids instead of the assistent director worrying about a teacher down the hall. The kids are great!
