HOPKINS, SC (WIS)- An early morning house fire Friday in Hopkins has taken the life of a child, according to authorities.

At around 1:30am, investigators say a fire broke out inside the house and 2-year-old Brianna Mitchell was trapped inside.

When firefighters got there, her mother was screaming for her.

"There was some people in the yard and she was saying her child was still on the inside," says Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins.

Jenkins tells us the father, who neighbors say is an army drill sergeant, tried to get back in.

"The father actually went in to find the child, couldn't get in, heavy smoke," he says.

He says a neighbor ran up with a fire extinguisher to see if he could get the heavy flames out, but to no avail. Firefighters went in a short time later.

"We found the child in the living room," says Jenkins.

Two-year-old Brianna died. The coroner says it was carbon monoxide poisoning or smoke inhalation.

The sad news affected neighbors like Doug Marshall, who remember seeing the little girl in the yard.

"This summer they had a pool out for her -- Mom and Grandma would play with the daughter in the pool," Marshall said.

Investigators say there was heavy damage in the kitchen, and believe that's where the fire started.

The family also lost their dog, a boxer.

The home had working smoke detectors.

So far there's no word on a cause. The girl's parents, Casey and Gregory Mitchell, were treated and released from Palmetto Health.

My prayers also go out to the family and friend of Brianna. I know the family will miss her dearly. She is with the Lord now, safe in His loving arms. May the family receive the strength they will need to overcome their grief.

Yes these people need our prayers. The childs maternal grandparents are located here. Does anyone know how the baby's parents are doing?? It says here they were released, but in the newspaper from Hopkins, says they are in fair condition in Augusta Hospital.Again, lets pray for these families!

Im related to them. The mother and father were released from Palmetto, but transferred to a burn unit in Georgia. They have both been in a drug induced coma since the fire because of their burns and because they can not be told about the death of their child while in such bad physical condition. Both Casey and her husbands parents are at each of their bedsides.

I'm close to the family and to let everyone know, they are taking money up for them at Surgoinsville Market, and Stanley Valley Market. Also, they are taking up money at TRW, the way I understood it's Gregs step father that works there. Please keep them in prayer!!
