OMG.........that is horrible!! When you fix mine and clean it up, I am going to hang this picture over my computer(in hopes to discourage me from smoking around my computer).

That is prety bad. I'd say this person probably smokes a bit more than what he told you though. Back when I smoked I smoked about that much in my house and around my computer It had some of what is pictured here inside of it but not anywhere near that ammount. He must just sit and blow smoke directly into the air intake vents to have it be that bad!

Jr knows what the inside of one of mine looked like; I too am a smoker, but I know enough to clean the thing out every month, too.
One tends to learn such lessons when a power supply literally explodes next to ones' ear lol.

YUK! Nasty!
I didn't clean my fan until about 4 years after I bought it, but it looked nothing like that.
My computer is not on all the time though and I don't smoke.

It's a wonder that computer didn't break down with all that crud. The heat sink on my 9-year old computer is only about half that size!

I can handle a smoker's computer. Poor Ow3n vomits though. lol.

It's the computers I open up and find live roaches in them that gag me. Ow3n has found these too.

When I do service calls I always keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with me.

Canned air is your friend. Unplug the computer and blow it out every couple of months.
I'm wondering with the computer looking this bad, how bad does the owner's lungs look?

The actual photo is posted on our bulletin board as a reminder to folks.

thats bullsheet, thats not from a smoker, thats looks like a case of humidity and lots of dust. Probably from someone who lives on a gravel road...or keeps a dusty house..smoke would only leave a stain, thats dust

Nope, the photo is taken after we blew out the case and cleaned with alcohol towelettes and before I opened the fan shroud. At which point I stopped cleaning to take a couple of pictures.
True tobacco smoke colors stuff yellow, but alcohol cleans it off. Humidity will not cause dust and pet hair to become a very sticky, non-water soluble mass.

People who live on gravel roads and do not smoke get a totally different look inside the case. the dust is not sticky and is very fine and a pale gray. A house where the owner doesn't smoke but allows a lot of dust to build up will have visible cobwebs and small dust bunnies.

Nope, tobacco smoke leaves a very sticky residue (yellowish) to which all dust sticks.

No,it is from smoking. I used to smoke and while mine was nowhere near that bad when I opened the case it had the same type of build up inside.probably only about 1/16 as bad but still there

Can you imagine the yellowed lungs of those little children who have been breathing that smoke from other family smokers? what a sad shame!

We got in another one today which was almost as bad as the one in the picture. I took time to get some photos of it and will size them and post them when i get a chance.

I think the plastic fan shrouds which Dell and some HP's use is a contributing factor. In ideal circumstances, the plastic fan shroud helps cool the processor more efficiently. The problem is situations do not remain ideal. in a heavy smoker's home, the shroud funnels incoming smoke to the fans and heat sinks, where it's tar and nicotine accumulates. Dust is sucked into it and sticks to the tar sticky fan and heat sink and accumulates. At a certain point the fan shroud which was helping to cool the machine actually makes it run much hotter because of the concentrated gunk.

Bottom line, once every 2-3 months, unplug your computer and use canned air to blow it out thoroughly...
Laptops can benefit from it as well. unplug them, leave them turned off and blow canned air through all the vents.

Do your keyboards while you are at it. Amazing how much better it performs without cracker crumbs lodged under the keys :)

Nope.... your's was very clean in comparison. We really try to find time to open up a computer case when it is brought in, while the owner is present, and show them the inside of the case. Sometimes there's a real surprise at what we find and we want customers to see for themselves the results.

But if perchance a computer qualifies for our "album of horrors" and "wall of shame"... we never identify the owner.

Except for Todd's personal computer of course... in which we found an ancient 1/2 a box of petrified left over KFC chicken, two empty Colt 45 cans, a black lace Victoria's Secret 36D bra and an ancient ticket stub for a Milli Vanilli concert.
