“Rogersville BMA makes no move to fill vacancy”

Hawkins Today; December 12, 2012: by Carolynn Poythress Elder

“Vice Mayor Philip Beal stepped down last week from his seat on the Rogersville Board of Mayor and Aldermen….

Absent from the meeting was Mayor Jim Sells. At the beginning of the meeting the aldermen agreed that Alderman Ann Howe would conduct the meeting. There was no item on the agenda to fill the seat vacated by Beal.

As the meeting was ending, Mark DeWitte, a favorite to take the seat and the seventh vote-getter in the last election asked,“What do you plan to do to fill the seat?” Howe replied,“I have absolutely no idea.” City Attorney Bill Phillips then said to the aldermen,“The charter leaves it up to you all to decide the means and method.” Following that exchange the meeting quickly adjourned.”

Seems to me, that there should be a written policy/procedure in place by this time to address this issue. It has come has come up twice in the past 10 years. Both times the board has decided and voted to appoint “Number Seven” to fill the vacancy. Has something changed? Who are the aldermen looking for to provide leadership and guidance?

I would classify this as a failure of leadership.

There won't be a number seven. Wait until the story unfolds completely. Since there is no written policy I suspect you will find one such policy quickly implemented that will exclude number seven.

Everybody knows they're pathetic but nobody seems to care. People ask every presidential election if that's the best the country can come up with. I ask that about my town.

I am guessing you will be tossing your hat in the ring since you obviously can do so much better.

I'd bet a pig in a poke that you're correct.

It's no coincidence that Sells chose to be "sick", especially since they had at least informally decided in the previous meeting that "#7" would be the traditional method.

That BP decided to make light of Sells' absence after the meeting only serves to reinforce the thought that Sells has no intention of letting Mark be named the replacement.

The fix is in, in other words. They'll just cook up a way, as usual.

Why, citizens of Rogersville, do you continue to vote for these clowns?

I know the BMA reads this forum, so this might be a good place to get across to them the facts. Even though there is no real policy in place, they have pretty much used the same rationale every time. That being either a member of the person who had the vacated seat's family, or the next highest vote total from the last election. People are watching closely this time, and if they pick this vacancy as the one to come up with a new rule there may be a lot of upset folks. The argument that it's too close to the next election will not fly, because Edwards was appointed closer to the last election than this. Do the right thing for a change.

YES, honesty would wreck the system in place. If you ran the city, would you want someone with a pen and that writing ability ,to have acess to information?

The booze problem was much, much, much worse in Rogersville in the late 1800s. I don't think liquor by the drink or package stores will resort in these fictitious and baseless claims that are being randomly thrown around as fact.

Our cityleaders are lapdogs of Satan. They steal, lie and put into actions which will result in the destruction of the pure and virtuous. They're afraid of Mark D. because his power of prayer will cause Satan's lapdogs to be sick and vomit blood.

Which part of the city do you live in? You seem to know what you are talking about so why don't you try for the position? It would be nice to have someone that won't always go along with everything they do!

I'm just a couple miles outside city limits, I'm afraid.
I do try to know what I'm talking about, however. Anyone can, you know - just a matter of doing some homework (including asking the right people involved the right questions), paying attention and keeping up with the news.
Wish more folks would do that. If they did, our city, county, state, COUNTRY wouldn't be in the shape they're in.
