Mention the name Byrd Burton to the casual music listener and they might remember him being from Rogersville. They might even remember that he was a member of The Amazing Rhythm Aces, the group that won a Grammy Award in the late 70’s for the song “The End Is Not In Sight (The Cowboy Tune).” Real East Tennessee music fans who love trivia may even remember him as a guitar player in the band The Loved Ones, popular in our area in the late 1960’s.
But, if you mention his name to most anyone in the music industry, they’ll know right away who Byrd Burton was. They’ll more than likely tell you the same thing that Sam Phillips once said of Burton.“Byrd is the most overlooked ‘cat’ in the pickin’ business,” said Phillips, whose Sun Records launched the careers of the likes of Elvis and Johnny Cash. His work as a studio musician in Nashville was unparalleled. In fact, he wasn’t overlooked by Dan Fogelberg, Don Williams, The Oak Ridge Boys, Emmylou Harris, Crystal Gayle, Mickey Gilley, John Conlee, Judy Rodman, Nanci Griffith, TG Shephard, Bobby Broddock, Pinkard and Bowden, Bobby Bare and many more. Byrd is featured as a studio musician on recordings by all these artists.
Burton passed away after a long bout with Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) on March 10. Any of Byrd’s friends will tell you that “there will never be the likes of him again.” A lot of stars of the music world would tell you the same thing, and a lot of them counted Burton among their friends.
His friends from the music industry were quick to respond when other friends of Byrd, who have begun calling themselves “The Committee of Five,” asked for help to raise money for Burton’s fight against the fatal disease. Originally a “benefit” concert, now a “memorial” concert featuring legendary rock band Kansas, will be held at Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville on Friday, April 18th. The event will also feature an auction of music memorabilia second to none.

continued from above...
Burton toured with Dolly Parton and Brooks and Dunn, and each of those artists donated autographed instruments to be auctioned. Dolly sent an autographed, handmade dulcimer and signed picture of herself, while Brooks and Dunn contributed a hand-signed Epiphone guitar.
Charlie Daniels sent an autographed picture and fiddle for the auction, along with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s autographed Epiphone Les Paul guitar. The auction will also include hand-signed guitars from .38 Special, Sheryl Crow and her band, the legendary group Styx, Gregg Allman, Edwin McCain, and Bo Bice of American Idol fame.
Perhaps one of the most interesting items will be an acoustic electric guitar autographed by all the members of the band Kansas. The guitar was donated by Kansas member Billy Greer, who has played an irreplaceable part in putting the event together.
Greer is originally from Hawkins County, and joined Kansas in the mid-1980’s. He, along with members Phil Ehart, Steve Walsh, Rich Williams, and David Ragsdale agreed to not only sign the guitar, but headline the memorial concert. Greer expressed interest in being a part of the event from the very start, and shortly afterwards convinced the members of Kansas to take part as well. He believes so strongly in the cause that he is making a special trip to the East Tennessee area to be featured live on many media outlets here. Stops during next week’s visit will include WQUT and WJHL in Johnson City, WCYB in Bristol, and WTFM in Kingsport among others. He also plans to do newspaper interviews and features in local entertainment publications.
“We’re looking forward to being in East Tennessee to show our support for our good friend Byrd and his family,” said Greer.“He was part of a large group of musical talent that area has produced, and will be missed. We hope everyone is making plans to come to the concert and auction.”
Tickets for the April 18th event are $30 and can be purchased through the Niswonger Performing Arts Center box office by calling FOUR TWO THREE SIX THREE EIGHT ONE SIX SEVEN NINE. Other auction items will include autographed albums from Kansas,.38 Special t-shirts, and much more. A commemorative event t-shirt is also in the works and will be available exclusively at the show. Proceeds from the event will go to Burton’s family for medical expenses.

Mark, you are a wonderful human being. I am so impressed at what your committee has been able to achieve in so little time. You are a great event planner. You have innate capabilities that cannot be taught or learned. I am very proud of you.

Thanks again Angie! Appreciate the exposure you've given the concert! Funny how fast news spreads when it's gossip, but when it's something like this nobody seems to know about it. Everybody please come to the concert if you can. It's a great event for a great cause and I know it's worth the price of admission!

Just wanted to give everyone a brief recap of the Byrd Memorial Concert held last Friday night, and say THANK YOU to everyone who helped, attended, or participated in the auction!

I can't begin to name everyone here, and if I do I'll leave someone out. But, I also can't go without mentioning the other members of The Committee of Five: Terry Johnson, Jonathan Harrington, Mike Garcia, and Craig Stapleton. As a group, an unbelievable amount of work was done in a very short time to pull this thing off.

I also can't go without saying thanks to Niswonger Performing Arts Center for keeping the expenses down, and BIG THANKS to The Dixie Highway Band, The BTeam Blues Band, and most of all KANSAS for one VERY AWESOME CONCERT!

There were so many people involved in this that it was simply remarkable, from the media that covered the event for us to the musicians who donated to the auction.
I can't thank everyone enough!

The bottom line: On Monday I'll send a check to the Barry Byrd Burton Medical Expense Fund for $38,302.37! Pretty good for a bunch of guys who didn't have a clue how to do this when we started.
