Cat Lady

I have 2 cats that wander over to my neighbors yard. She tells me that they crap in her yard but I have never seen this. And on top of that there are about a dozen stray cats around here that do not belong to me. I have tried to make this work with her and tell her that she can call me and I will clean up their mess but as far I know they havent done any physical damage.

Does anyone know of any cat laws or cat owners rights and where I can find these? Thanks!

Keep your cats inside. Lots of people do.

The specific laws vary from state to state. I am not sure what it is for Tennessee. In general, the legal principle is that cats are wild animals, unlike dogs, and therefore no one is responsible for them. It also follows from this that it is OK to shoot or poison stray cats that are creating problems. Aside from that, cats let to run loose can get feline AIDS, rabies, and other problems. If you care for your cat, get it spayed, and keep it inside.

Don't listen to Rick Martin, he doesn't know what he is talking about.

There has only been one notable cat case to reach the US Supreme Court, Miles v. City Council of Augusta, Georgia, 551 F. Supp. 349 (S.D. Ga. 1982).

In this case, the justices ruled that municipalities have the right to require a business license for street performers working with talking cats.

Hope this helps clear things up for you.

Also, since you are interested in the complex topic of cat law, I recommend for you very fine "Cats and the Law" by Anmarie Barrie which is the standard reference for those many of us who are interested in cat law and its implications.

Cats do not mess in their own yard, they always mess in surrounding yards. It's a fact.

It is the owner's responsibility to keep their pets locked up or on a leash instead of wandering around the neighborhood.

When cats make a mess in my yard or leave tracks and scratches all over my car, I set out traps, then take the cats and have them put to sleep.

If you tell a crazy cat lady that her cats are causing a problem, she will redirect the problem onto you or someone else, she will react as though you are the crazy one and you are the one that is causing the problems. You can't reason with a crazy cat lady because her cats are like her children.

Crazy cat ladies are all the same. You see all the time about some old woman with a couple of hundred cats running all over her house. Some of these ladies are living in a world of denial, they are in the same class of people as compulsive hoarders.

I wanna know whats wrong with some of you people!! All this person did was ask if anyone could tell her her rights as a cat owner! She did not ask to be criticized or bashed on. Why dont some of you people have a little bot of compassion? Maybe her cats are all she has!! And if you cant be helpful and answer the question, heres an idea!! DONT FUCKING POST!!

I say this every day about my neighbors dogs "if I wanted dog poop in my yard, I would have a dog"!!! One day I will call the neighbors and tell them, for now I am trying to get along, but feel very disrespected.

My wife's dog and cat are both in the house. It is a very good question as to,"What are the Laws",because the cat does run out at times.

If anyone can give a light to this, it would be apprecited.

To repeat, since you are interested in the complex topic of cat law, I recommend for you very fine "Cats and the Law" by Anmarie Barrie which is the standard reference for those many of us who are interested in cat law and its implications. This book has everything that is known about can law in the US and is a very practical reference for understanding what your legal obligations and those of your neighbors are as relates to cat oriented public interactions.
