Now why does Sparta need a new high school? I say a big "NO" to this Bond and Tax. The existing school has done a fine job with me. I am employed at a Wal-Mart in Springfield and just recently promoted to a department manager position. It took me 10 years to get where I am now, but with still limited income, I won't be able to afford any tax increase. I'm sure there are a lot of people in the same situation as I am, especially with the economy as it is now. Besides, if the city council has the need to spend, maybe they should read the other topics here. Like build sideways to the school, instead of the one in front of the post office. The post office doesn't do as much business as it use too, thats the reason why they raised their rates. People email and text more. But there is more kids walking to school. But, if they feel we need to have a new school, then tax only the track and businesses that are suppossibly benefiting from this new found wealth. Wasn't that one of their arguments, that the city "WOULD" benefit. So, BENEFIT us you businesses, by building Sparta a NEW High School. Without taxing the rest of us. Vote "NO", I say.

Agree with you here. Now don't forget they are also going to have the new libary tax bond also on November ballot that they already bought the property for accross from the post office. I can't afford more taxes either. When is enough, enough?

Umm, just an FYI- it's not the city council behind this tax, it's the school board. The city doesn't have anything to do with the school board.

Well Well Well, I thought this would have turned out to be a "grown-up" discussion. This just proves another reason why it would be a waste of money to build a new high school. Actually, any new school would be a waste of my hard earned money. I would think there would be pro's and con's on the issue of new taxes for a school. But again, you have proven my point on the waste it would be.r Bird...I did check about the library. Sparta has nothing to do with it. It is a Christian County thing, and they want to build one of 3 new libraries. The main library will be in Ozark, and the other 2 will be in Sparta and Clever. So, all of Christian County will be voting on this.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear about the library. As far as Clever goes they bought the land but didn't pass the tax increase that they need for this. Will Sparta? Remember I am on your side.

It was not my attention to sound hostile towards you. Was just responding towards your earlier post about the library and that I did take the time to further check into it. Was very appreciative for the info you gave.

Something to think about on school & library tax voting coming up. library is 8.7 cent now, if passed in November it will be 25 cent per $100 assess value. school is 3.50 now, if passed in November it will be 4.07 per $100 assess value. If I did my math right, I will be looking at $200 a year increase on my real estate & personal property taxes. Here is how I came up with it. From tax receipt 08, take valuation (in which is assess value) on real estate &/or personal property times (x) that by the new to be tax rate for library &/or school. Compare to 08's to see what your increase will be.

Oh my goodness! That is a little bit of a jump now isn't it! Thank you for the mathmatics and formula on how to arrive at this. I know it will make a difference for my family as well. Between this and the sewer hit we just took and next will be the water when they build the new water tower! Wow for just a small town the Mayor must think we are loaded i think this may drive away the population that he is trying to invite to our community! Its about the Growth Right??

It appears I am in the minority in this forum, but even at $200/year increase in my property taxes, I think that would be worth it for updated facilities for our kids. That $200/year is less than $17 a month. I'm sorry, but an improved building is worth the cost of a large AJ's pizza every month to me.

AJ's pizza wouldn't help the growth of the community now would it. people are strapped for money in this town and you all think in the city council office that we are made of gold. This community has one of the highest family services help for food stamps and rent assistance already. The tax increases wont bother some but it will drive away a few too!
