Anyone else sad about the Waldenbooks closing? I never have enough money to buy any of the books, but I love to go in and look at them!! Probably why they're closing...

I think it's a darn shame. These companies don't realize that a small town like ours needs a place to buy books.
Just because we don't rake them in a bunch of cash doesn't mean they should arbitrarily shut it down eliminating jobs in an already depressed area AND dumbing down the population by eliminating a source of materials that allow us to open our minds to varying points of view and obtain information about the world in which we live. Reading is like a drug for me. Thank Goodness for the library. At least it will remain open.

I don't think they are closing tohelp keep unenployeement up. I have talked to people who tried to have a business at the mall. Guess what the rent is. Smart value closed, That music store shut down, so don't automatically think stores are against people.

If operating a successful business that doesn't rake in a bunch of cash is such a piece of cake, Jeffssis, does this mean you'll be opening a book store in Alpena to replace the one that's closing?

If only I could. I know I don't have the self-discipline to do that nor do I have the start up funds.
I encourage all of those who love reading to patronize the library. If you don't see what you want on the shelves they can order it for you.
They have movies too.

That's not very nice. There are many factors to include when owning a "successful" business: Overhead, customer base, economic conditions for the area, etc. One of the biggest drivers of these types of stores (Waldenbooks)going under is WalMart. They have such a great spending threshold and purchasing capacity that the "little guy" simply cannot keep up. With people watching their pennies a lot closer nowadays, it can mean a $6.00 -$10.00 dollar difference sometimes for just one book. And I'm sorry, but if I could save this kind of money, I'm going to WalMart because I've got to watch my own budget. Times are not like they used to be.

I understand all of that. Jeffssis did not. If you re-read his original post, he gives the impression that keeping the doors open on a business that makes no money should be easy-peasy. He was the one not taking overhead, customer base, economic conditions for the area and hyper-global-megatrons like Wal-Mart into consideration. I was merely pointing out that if running a business that makes no profits is such a cakewalk, he should give it a try.

Apologize for what? Your "Roxy is paranoid" name suits you. I don't think I was being rude. People interpret things differently. Doesn't make them bad people. Everyone has a right to their own opinion.

Two people think you were. If you care then say you are sorry. If you do not care, do not say it.

I will not apologize for voicing my opinion.Everyone else has their opinion also and I didn't feel the need to ask for an apology. Is there something more going on here than the lack of a bookstore?? I don't understand. Anyhow, I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know that I have a lot to be thankful for.

Wow. Based on my preview of the blogs on this site, people have issues sticking to the point. Whew. Give opinions and stop bashing. Man.

Walden Books is owned by Borders. Borders is (and has been) feeling the effects of the economy and they are downsizing where they can. Based on sales volume and research, they are closing. I believe (not sure) they will eventually close all Waldens stores. I live out of state and they are all gone here. Borders only now. Very sad for small towns. Someone creative needs to find an niche market that will attract a specific consumer. Otherwise, Walmart wins. Sad to say.
