I attended a seminar for teachers on Ocracoke Island in 1999. Dr. Orrin Pilkey, geologist from Duke University, discussed the erosion of the barrier islands around the world, especially the North Carolina Outer Banks. According to him, Rodanthe takes the brunt of these storms and is slowly eroding (I think his words were, "If I were going to buy property out here, Rodanthe would not be my first choice.")
He described the other areas as 'shifting sands': while they erode on the ocean side (east) the sound side (west) continues to build up. |
