A friend of mine is writing a book and asked for my help researching some things for her. Does anyone know who the Grand Dragon of the KKK was in Indiana approximately around 1977? This isn't exactly something a quick google search can find.

the name escapes me at the moment. I will post when I think of it. Go to google maps...Mansfield. Go north on Mill Rd. There is a body of water on the right. Past that on the left appears to be 2 buildings, you can also see a large machine shed. That is where he lived...he is deceased, as well as his wife whose maiden name was Crowder. They had a male lion sometimes chained, sometimes caged out back. I actually was there several times in the 80's.

I have a book topic for her. IT could be titled.
"Good Old Boys" Deaths and Deception in Parke County.
it could be a series, so much goes on here.

Thanks for the responses. We are going to be visiting the area in May. AMY, she is hoping to turn this into a book series.

it ALL ties together... Oh! what a tangled web we weave; When first we practise to deceive!...

if she really wants to complete a series she should use a pseudonym....and that's NO JOKE

there are plenty around here that would be will to help. Keep posting.

She'll be using a pseudonym, but I wonder if it will be enough. It's a work of fiction with some real-life details. I don't know the legal ramifications of it all.

Art Taylor was not the Grand Dragon....it was his son Kenny. Art was involved in the Klan and held a Ralley there once around that time. Art was a good person....but very old school in his views

Art taylor is my great uncle....i can remember as a kid all the kkk activity, however my grandpa joe kiger kept me pretty sheltered from that side of the family....everytime we would go to the mansfield festival we would always stop in and say hello and go see the lion. As far as the family history goes he was the grand dragon then stepped down many years ago when his son took over that title

Anyone of the residents of Mansfield can tell you about Art. The Berry's, Crowder's and Lemont's all lived there in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Everyone in the area of Mansfield, Ferndale and the surrounding areas were friends with the family. Not that the people who lived in the area were affiliated with the clan. Art was a good man, he never tried to "convert" people to his way of thinking. It was never even spoke about when we were over there. The only time you knew something was going on was when he would let everyone know so we stayed away. Other than the school bus stopping there to pick up and drop off the kids during rallies, we were never around during clan time! I do remember as a kid driving into town, Rockville, there would be clan members with the robes standing at the stop light in front of the court house handing out pamphlets to passing motorists and pedestrians. That was really the only recruitment that I knew of from the area clan. Good luck on the book and research!

Does anyone ever hear of current Klan activity in Parke County anymore? I'm sure they're still active, but I haven't heard of anything in probably 15 years...
