So what exactly is the criteria for being allowed to distribute Communion at a mass?? I would think that a thorough and complete washing of the hands, would be manditory, no? I am also curious to know if this un-named individual actually knew of their condition, before handing out the Communion?

It's been several years since I stopped receiving under both species. Sharing a sip of wine with more than a hundred people from the same chalice rightfully appeared to be a significant health risk. I never considered the potential risk of receiving the host from the hands of extraordinary ministers or clergy. Are we approaching the days where the host will be distributed using latex gloves?

As usual, the "troll" gallery abounds. But even a troll, at some point, does participate in some kind of religious tradition: either sipping from a cup, taking host, kissing a book/scroll/ring, sacrificing some non-descript animal & writhing in it's blood, completed by a group orgy (LOL) It seems there should be guidelines provided to the people who carry out the actual tasks. Sounds like this particular incident may have been a hygiene issue - and if so, was it pre-meditated? And Peter, you may have something there with the latex gloves-but do you ever notice when someone is handling food w/the gloves on, they stop to restock something, then adjust there cap, rub their nose, and take payment, give you change, and move onto the next customer-same gloves!! Same concept here: person would have to change gloves everytime a host is placed IN someones mouth, or if they sneeze, cough, etc... Ain't gonna happen!

Don't laugh. Around 1989, I witnessed a man yell out Allah is great! at a prayer meeting in a Catholic church. I told him Allah is not great.

I like the Yellow eyes of the North of the Tracks Trash in Massapequa Park, just one more thing the village idiots of North of the Trash have.

Add this to the high end drug dealers in Massapequa Park, and the cracked out kids, now Hep A - yellow skin, yellow eyes and Liver disease.

The fact is that none of live in hermetically sealed boxes. Things like this will happen. The good news is that those in leadership had the awareness to contact the proper health officials and get the word out to the community. There's a little saying that "Living in community is messy." This is one of those "messy" realities of being in a community. Hermits don't have this problem.

If you went to a restaurant, and the waiter grabbed a handful of string beans bare handed and put them on your plate, you'd be disgusted. If in McDonalds the cashier grabbed and unwrapped burger and handed it to you, you would be disgusted.

If you went to a bar, and asked for a beer, and the waiter handed you a glass that someone had just sipped from at the bar, you'd be disgusted.

The ritual of simulating the last supper, even when you through in transubstantiation, was created long before anyone understood epidemiology.

If you've been in a Catholic Churhc lately, less than 1/10th of communicants receive under both species - for good reason. This sacred experience does not prevent infectious disease.

No one grabs a host in their full fist as one would have to do so with "string beans" or a "hamburger" The drinking from the cup nothing like swizzling beer in a bar. The attempt to compare these things to the distribution of Communion is a stretch to say the least. A priest or Eucharistic minister uses thumb and forefinger to pick up and place the host into one's hand or onto their tongue. The fact that those choose to not receive from the cup should not deter anyone else from receiving. Yes, one leaves themselves open to the spread of illness but with a healthy immune system this is not the problem you seem to think it is. Unless you work for the CDC and know something I doin't. The reason this event even made the news is because of its rarity. If this happened all the time it wouldn't have.

The amount of bacteria on an unwashed hand is significant. Consider that a eucharistic minister does not wash his hands immediately before distributing communion, this could be a source of infection of a communicable disease, like hepatitis. When you drink from a shared cup, the potential of disease is multipled by the dozens of people sipping from the same cup. This is why the church stopped the practice during the flu epidemic last year.

Your comment about "healthy immune systems" is silly, considering the number of older communicants who have compromised immune systems.

This isn't to dissuade people from receiving a sacrament, it's for any thinking person to consider. Burying your head in the sand won't make the problem of potentially spreading an infectious disease through unsanitary religious practices go away.
