Heart on the homefront

KABUL , Afghanistan -- In the predawn darkness, Ashley Calhoun's laptop cast a blue glow over her tiny Army National Guard cubicle as she adjusted her Web camera so she could be seen in her living room back home. Full Story

Why would the Tribune decide to showcase the trauma of separation, but only for a FEMALE soldier?

Because throughout history, male soldiers are considered expendable. Their role in the family is subjugated to their role in the military.

Now that the push for women's rights and equality has put them in the military, and brought them to the front lines, we are being told how hard it is for them to be away.

It's worth noting that some divorce court judges who let Mom move away with the kids think this kind of video link is an adequate substitute for fathers' contact with their children.

Courts seem to think that putting Dad in front of a Webcam is a suitable replacement for having Dad there with his children.

When it comes 'equality' between the sexes, there is still a long way to go.

<quoted text> Easy...If you're a woman in the military with the prospect of being activated...DON't get pregnant! I am grateful to all the men and women who serve, but unfortunately, sacrifices are made not only by mothers, but fathers as well.
Also, as far as the "elite" making sure their boys don't serve...this is drivel. Many of the "elite" started in the military. Having 4 sons, I don't agree with a draft. My oldest son wants to fly F-16s and attend the Air Force Academy. My other boys want to do other worthwhile things like engineering and medicine. They're not partying, but they are working hard in school. What a parent teaches their child determines the kind of parent and person they will be in the future. I agree that there are MANY men & women who wouldn't even die for their own child let alone the country. Our government enables this attitude. Why are there so many babies with no fathers? They aren't held accountable. If men were forced to be financially and emotionally involved, as well as be physicially present, they'd watch where they were sticking themselves. These goofs were taught by their own parents (either verbally or through action), that there are no consequences for anything you do. I say, put their butts in the military, and beat the crap out of them regardless of race, religion, sex, etc.
Well we mostly agree.. the last statement being a very good point.. but it would be against their civil liberties.. BS..I was talking about the elites who hold office.. Very few of their sons were drafted or put in combat during Nam .. or volunteered now..I had 2 son's had to raise them mostly by myself after my divorce.. the oldest was a handful.. no draft.. he could of used it when he was younger..but after his first son was born he did a complete about face..?? He even quotes things I told him.. strange.. the youngest wanted to join but had to many allergies they wouldn't take him he tried.. my thanks to your sons..

I shed a few tears when first reading this but at the end I was shaking my head and calling this woman and idiot. She's selfish. I wonder how deeply this child will suffer for her Mom to run away and be a soldier for a war that never should have happened.

WoW! This woman assumes the burdens and risks of protecting YOU from those who would do you, and your countrymen, harm and SHE'S the selfish one?

It would be nice if this war never happened but we are not afforded the luxury of knowing when our enemies will attack us. Your statement reveals your ignorance on the subject. Instead of lambasting this fine young lady, you should be have the decency and respect to commend her for her honorable and courageous stand to protect YOU from harm, to protect YOU so that you may live in a nice country, a nice home, and have the right to express your opinion - regardless of how misguided it is.

Bob, you don't know my stance on the military so you have no leg on which to stand to call me ignorant. I'm commenting on that one woman and her choices for her family. She probably signed up thinking this would be a cake walk, got pregnant and is now iliciting sympathy for her own choices in life. She is selfish in regard to her child's well being. She is out there tearing apart families while publicly seeking sympathy for her own "plight" and I bet she cannot even tell you why we are there. I'm inclined to agree with Jus-tice.

Bob is like a lot of people in this country who is quick to point out what other countries do to us but fail to understand what preceded the action.Bush attacked Iraq at the behest of Israel.Bush did not mention this but instead blamed it on Saddam for being a dictator. One of many that we use as puppets to control their people and do our bidding.During the cold war these dictators committed atrocities against their own people all over the world with our blessing. We killed Iran's elected Prime Minister and installed the Shah,a cruel despot. The people got rid of the Shah and took over our embassy. They were now the bad guys.Israel bombed Iran's power plant,an act of war but they could not retaliate because we gave Israel our blessing.Israel is saying that Iran is building a nuclear bomband we are running with the ball like we did in Iraq about the WMD's.It" a snark accusation but will stand even though it hasn't been proven.Iran signed the non proliferation treaty and is entitled to build all the power plants that it wants to.We violated the treaty by giving Israel nuclear weapons but it's ok,we are number one.Israel wants to attack Iran and this will be the trigger for us to level the land and kill it's people because they are the bad guys.I am a Christian veteran and I follow my spritual leader, not my political leader.
