The self appointed director of the Simon Michael Gallery of fine art, David Wilson, is under investigation for fraud and forgery. He is a convicted felon for forgery, fraud, assault, and burglary. There is evidence to support these claims and a court date is set for next week. Local artists and the public are advised that any promises or deals made by Mr. Wilson be put on hold until further notice. Although Mr. Wilson claims to have done so much for the gallery, the evidence will show gross misconduct in matters of finance and poor moral choices. He took advantage of a kind elderly woman, and if he hadn't been stopped by a few concerned citizens, would have wiped out her and her family's life savings. Mr. Wilson also had her sign her whole estate over to him, and he had plans to leave it to his own children. Some may have bought into this con mans rouse, and some may even show to testify on his behalf. Let the evidence speak for itself, and lets put this guy back where he belongs.

Nothing like estranged family trying to rip off their relative to spread lies and dirt about a man who has dedicated the last THREE years to saving both her life and the gallery. You'd know that had you bothered to visit Zona and the gallery in the last decade or so.

Admit that you two stand to gain a bounty by libeling this hard-working man. When I was in the gallery to remove all of my art it seemed obvious that Zona was not "right" -- I don't know what y'all have done to her but she was NOT the same person she was when David was there.

If the gallery was so bad before and so good now why have ALL of the artists removed their art. No one will deal with the new "owners" (read: pirates). Simon Michael's art is now all that is there, but that's because he is dead and cannot remove his art. I'll bet he's rolling in his grave, though.

It is sad to see what is becoming of the gallery of a man who essentially started the arts community in Rockport. But all you people seem to care about is the value of what is there, and not for the community but as a bounty for yourselves.

Instead of libeling and slandering a decent man why don't y'all go back home where you belong and leave Rockport and the gallery AND DAVID alone.

Word around town is that there has been a "hostile" take over of the gallery by a distant relative of the owner. David, the previous director has been under attack by these people since that time. So who is right and who is wrong? A lot of artists who trusted the previous director and who were showing their work in the gallery have subsequently pulled their work after the takeover. So who does that tell you that they trust more?

@ Tom: The judge made his ruling based on the facts that were presented to him, and not based on"word around town".(Gossip)
@ Janet:There is evidence to suspect criminal exploitation and undue influence in this case which will come to light in the days to come. "Decent" men manage to live thier lives on the outside of prison walls. The self appointed "director" with his criminal history in forgery and theft to name a few, should not be anywhere near an elderly, vulnerable woman and her business and legal affairs. The gallery,a historic memorial to a great artist, will continue to be open to all with Zona, the owner, at the helm.

Tom, that "distant" relative is the only living member of her immediate family Zona has left --- her sister. I think you need to hire a fact checker instead of dealing with the town gossips. Or here's a novel idea, why don't you actually stop by the gallery and speak to the owner herself?

I'm sure Zona could fill your ear about her experiences with Mr. Wilson and his "management" of the gallery. Just for the record, Zona asked her family members for help to get David Wilson out of her gallery and out of her life. Feel free to hire him to run YOUR business, though, if you think he's such a valuable asset. As fate would have it, he's available!

Janet, you mentioned that Zona seemed "different" when you were in the gallery. Let me enlighten you about that. She was extremely angry with you for all of the ridiculous things you've been posting about her and her business. For instance, you posted on her Facebook page that she hadn't been seen in 3 days and all sorts of other silly things. When I read that to her (as we were on the way to take her out to eat at Charlotte Plummer's) she had us take down your goofy comment and ban you from her Facebook page. Maybe, dear Janet, YOU were the reason Zona seemed "different" and not because of us, her family.

Let's also address your charge that we are trying to benefit from Zona's gallery financially. Actually, at this point my parents have sunk about $20,000 of their own retirement money in the gallery trying to bail the business out of the hole it was in after David Wilson's "management" of it. There will be much more coming, too, from what I've seen.

Zona asked her family for help to get David out of her life and out of her gallery, so maybe you should respect her wishes. Or perhaps you should look at this whole situation as a golden opportunity for you to snap up David Wilson to manage YOUR business, since you are so high on him. Maybe you and Tom could flip a coin or arm wrestle each other for the privilege of hiring him. Just a thought...

We had heard lots of rumors about the Simon Michael Gallery closing down from neighbors around Victoria where the owner evidently lived in the past, so we took a short road trip to Rockport to see if we could find some art to decorate our new digs. Our thought was that if the gallery was in trouble there might be some good deals. I know... Opportunists, right? Guilty!:)

We had a really great time shopping and gawking at some of the beautiful pieces there. We definitely have our eyes on a couple we will be back for soon, but found a perfect piece for a problem area in the house, so we had a very successful outing. When we came home we were searching online to find where we had heard the rumor about the gallery closing so we could post that it definitely is not closing and has lots and lots of terrific artwork there. If artists have taken art out you couldn't prove it by our visit because there was plenty of great work to choose from.

We passed a very pleasant afternoon visiting with the owner and some family members and shopping for just the right pieces. We will certainly be back!! It's such a nice gallery, complete with nice grounds, as well.

I am deeply shocked and saddened to read so much about a man who we dearly loved, and named our son after, and Zona, his dear friend and a woman for whom we had so much respect. Our days in Rockport were in the 1980s, a long time ago. So hard to believe that something so devious could come from a man who was so full of life and inspiration.
