Hello, I am a 38 year old male married and I have 3 kids 15, 13, 10 years of age. I want to move to Rockport. I am currently in El Paso TX and am having a hard time finding employment here that does not require spanish. I am a security professional. I was the chief of Security for the Fort Bliss Inn, after being business based, I have been looking for work. I am either over quilified for the local companies in El Paso, or the pay is so low it is not worth my time to consider the job offered. I have been to the area many times, and love the climate and people I have met down there. I would love to make it my new home. Do you have any advice, warnings, areas of town to avoid etc. Please let me know. TY

Muhney see my comments under the water park section.

Welcome to Rockport - I will now have someone else to argue with in person rather than online in city.com .

There are no really bad areas of town but there are some poorer places.

The Rockport Pilot online has some jobs and places to live in. We have a new sheriff and they are often hiring - go to aransas county.org and check the employment.

Rockport is almost entirely English speaking. I practiced law all over the state and use it so infrequently here that I've lost a lot of it. We have 20% hispanics here but most of them have been here many generations.

Housing is a good buy right now. Waterfront is desired and expensive.

My kids are 8 and 16 and we'd be glad to show you around.

Whoops didn' see the ages of your kids.

The 10yr old will most likely go to Fulton Elementary that's north of Rockport ( but pretty much attached). The 13 year old will go to Rockport Middle School a few miles south and the 15yr old will be at the high school - which is next to the high school.

I strongly suggest you find a nice place to rent prior to buying. We just moved here and are renting, because we are not sure what schools our child needs to be in. None of the schools around are as good as the one we left in Austin, but we need to be sure he's safe and learning!

mapare I put my contact info on the other thread -call me! Im a school board member and will tell you the pros and cons. I do gather much of the info at school board meetings. Generally ACISD is way better than Corpus - for learning lack of gangs and drugs. There were 3 drug cases in all our schools last year all pot.

On the other hand Gregory Portland kids score higher than us in certain grades- they have a bit more discipline problems.

Port Aransas is probably the best in the area but its extremely small and housing may be expensive.

But call! My email is on the ACISD website - its the only email listed under school board.

That was the plan. I am not ready to Buy, 1 because I am not sure Rockport is where I will want to stay long term yet or not... second because in this market buying is too unstable to buy something that may drop a few more thousand dollars.. waiting for that rock bottom. The schools there seem to be on par with what we have in El Paso TX, so the kids wont expect much change. My concern is Gangs and Drug activity.

Muhney look on my facebook site there are campaign videos of what I thought the problem was- a coupleof posts above I summed it up, I sent those people my number - and Im listed but they didn't call.

I'm critical of Texas schools in general but we are well above the average- see the Texas Education Agency Website.

I have absolutely no clue when she says the schools are not safe - My son has been a student at every campus except Little Bay and my little girl has been at LIttle Bay.

She needs to be specific and she hasn't called.

Our new Superintendent Joey Patek is doing a fine job - Im the only one who ever complains.

I want to start a strong pre-k program with a building design I brought back from architects in Garland and I'd like to beef up the GT program.

I don't know much about Austin schools, but I do know that among disadvantaged children ACISD is near the best in the state at graduating them, at least 20% better than Austin or Houston.

If I hear about this again I will research Austin on TEA and see what she's talking about.

Found ya. Love the old buildings you have on the profile.

You know what I have enjoyed about this forum more than the El Paso Topix? People have been a lot less criticle, and insulting here. El Paso Topix is just a spam fest of hate and ridicule.

Hi all, just popping in to say hello. My son and I are moving to Rock Port in June, and we know no one. I have spoken to the Principle of the high school and she invited my son to come down and visit the school before the end of this school year. I am not sure about work yet as I have solid experience in a couple of fields.
Mapare, we are moving from Austin too and I must say leaving Austin and putting my 13 year old in an unknown school system is a little scary! My opinion is this, there is good and bad in all schools I just have to stay on top of what he is involved in. I just have really enjoyed the Rock Port area everytime I have visited. Nice folks!!

Hey y'all. Sounds like Rockport's the place to be! We are planning on moving there this summer when I retire from the state. It will be me, my wife and 10yo step-daughter. We planned on moving last year, but when the economy took a dive, we decided to wait till I could retire. We even got our daughter's braces in Corpus so we wouldn't hafta' drive to Austin. lol So we are down there at least every six weeks for her check ups. We are going down Feb 14-16 for her next check up and plan on touring the middle school on that Monday. We'll have to make a plan to meet up and introduce ourselves.
