Staffing companies can place minimum wage grunts (parolees?) all the way up to doctors!

Now there's no sense in being "ugly" here.
The point I was making is that if many of the "grunts" are parolees then are they going to go through what a substitute has to go through - training, get their finger prints taken and a back ground check if they are going to work with the children?
At the start of the year one of the cleaning crew was found to be taking things from the classrooms (which is not new) but they found out he lied on his application and was a parolee.
At least he was in the school after the kids were gone but he did harass one of the teachers.
My main question is: Will these "minimum wage grunts" be working with our children?
yes they are targeting paprpros and janitors and others

it will be parapros who are trained to work with the children in the class rooms and janitors

Cherokee Art Teacher- Yes, some of those temps will be in the school when the kids are. Outsourcing cafeteria workers, janitors, paraprofessional (like to see how that is going to work, but what I have heard),just about any and everyone who is not a teacher or admin will be temp. I know so far with the temp service with lawn care has been pretty crappy as well as some of the afterschool cleaning (oh, but the cleaning contract went to someone's cousin) so I am not sure how good the temps are going to be. It is different in the business world when a person can come in to file and do certain secretarial work or even in the medical profession from time to time but education is totally different. I am with you, it is a scary thought that strangers instead of the home town people who support and love the schools are being kicked out of their position. The solution is to use who you have to do the jobs that are needed. Find ways to turn money instead of cutting people. If the board continues in this direction the economy for this county will go further down. No one will want to move in if the kids are around temps, if programs are always being cut then added back then cut (roller coaster judgments show instability) and a lack of community support. We need people with money to move in not by pass Polk for Floyd or Paulding. We do not need to lose industry because they do look at the school situation. We do not need to lose the backbone of those whose families have worked in the system but are now being thrown out like the dish water, they will move or get jobs else where. Which means they will stop buying locally because it is much easiler to stop on your way home from work in Floyd and Paulding than it is in Polk. So the issue is much larger than the school, it will impact the county as a whole in the long term. Think outside of the box folks- make Polk grow!! Growth brings money, money creates revnue for jobs which impacts the schools in a positive way. Case in point, look at the sudden start up of private schools in the county- not a good sign just one that reflects the distrust and lack of quality in the schools. We do not need that, though I am not against private schools, it just is a sign when in a couple of years several spring up.

no one is safe the classified staff the temp agency will bring in their own busses and cafeteria equiptment and hire temps in the long run they will be in controll of everything and we won't be able to stop using them because the county will not be able to replace the things that the temp service has supplied so the temp has you there and the county will still be in debt they also use agencies out of county state or country for example there is a temp agency first student in canada that temps and supplies school systems so not much thought has been put into this

First Student is already in Georgia, mostly in the areas below Macon. Granny, you are very right on the requirements and other incidentals that come along with using such a company.

If thought had been put into this, there would be nothing to blog about and it wouldn't be Polk County either, sad to say.

spread the work ,with colleagues, friends, neighbors, and family. this ia a communnity issue please let the schoolboard know that we do not trust a for-profit outside company to care for our community's children contact your board members call email write or talk face-to-face it is vital to voice you concerns we do not want outsource companies coming in with their employees to take the parapros bus drivers janitors lunchroom ladies and others jobs these companies can put anyone in the class with your children driving buses janitors or any type work concerning the polk school district thank you this was on the agenda at the board tonight and mr williams tabled it

Why not use money the xchool board gets from special children to pay for parapros? my daughter says she has to sign something all the time giving medicaid money to the school board for my gradnson i don't see how that is possible but she would like to know were that money goes. Does any one know anything about this or what the money is used for.

Nana G- that money goes to pay for therapist such as occupational and physical therapist, speech, and things that directly influence the education for your grandson. If he needs a one-on-one parapro, then it pays part of the salary not all of it in some cases. That money has a paper trail a mile long so it is tracked, no misuse there or lots of heads roll. Lots of laws and regulations involved with that money, and medicaid doesn't always cover it all. People forget that occupational, physical, and speech therapist have medical license not teaching degrees so their pay is different. Plus if there is any equipment that the school therapist work with, it comes out of that shrinking budget as well to fix braces, wheelchairs, special adaptive technology, etc.

Aslyn who has that paper trail so heads wont roll? Many have asked but no one has seen where money goes except the school board can use any way they choose. Parents need to demand to see where money goes. If it is as you say then great. If not then heads do need to roll if the money does not help special kids.

The school board has nothing to do with medicaid. Medcaid can only be used for specific purproses. Does your grandson ride a special bus? medicaid helps pay those drivers. Has your child had to receive any sort of equapiment such as orthopedic AFO's for the feet or hands? Has your grandson required the use of an adaptive augmentitive technology? Does your grandson require any nursing care at the school? If Polk County uses the dental bus to provide dental care for your grandson, the money can go there. Medicaid covers any expenses that are medical related, special transportation does fall under that converage.
The teachers do not understand medicaid so they have no clue how it is spent. you must go to the special ed director or the parent mentor, they can explain medicaid coverage.
The sad thing is that parents of special needs children have no clue how many extras they are receiving to educate their child. The lower functioning or the more physically handicap, the more money it takes to educate the child.
FTE is another source that helps fund special education. If your child is not at school on the day of the count then money for your child is lost. That is why schools make a big fuss about attendance. The more services a child receives the more money the government helps to support but not all funds for educating your child come from that pot either. It is extremely complicated. Did you call and ask if there is a parent mentor in this county? You can rant on topix all you want but it takes a phone call to get answers. School board CANNOT use medicaid money, it is only for your child's needs. If I knew your child and the disability, I could tell you exactly where the money is going. But it would not be wise to announce publically the nature of the disability as this is a public forum and some things fall under the privacy act laws. Here is the information for Polk County, these people can answer your questions. http://www.parentmentors.org/Community/Polk.p...

Aslyn, You seem to have a lot of surface knowledge related to special needs children. You may simply be naive and assume that both teachers and parents "don't have a clue" what is going on. I am aware of the parent mentor and special education directors knowledge of this subject as I have asked/ I don't think my mother (Nana G)post was a rant she was expressing questions and concerns. I do have a few questions for you. Do you have a child with special needs? If not, please do not assume that parents do not have a clue about the cost of items and what is involved in the education of their children. Have you seen or do you have proof of your assumptions that medicaid money does go to buy diapers, special transportation, equipmentand does not go for other projects? Just because there is a regulation on how the money should be spent does not prove that it is handled the right way. how do you know the teachers do not have a clue where the money is going? What about the parent mentor and director? Have you asked them as I have? If so, what were their answers to you? I am going to assume you are a very nice person and are just trying to be helpful. But please be careful in the way you express your opinions because that is what they are, opinions. I would like to hear from other parents on this topic to see if they have any answers. It is money from our kids and we have the right to know

I have experience with medicaid billing, have a child with special needs, have taught special ed, been a special ed adminstrator, as well as an advocate. And, I have had to deal with many special ed teachers all over the state as well as those in this county. You are correct, you have a right to know.

Bradshaw, is that your official opinion as a school employee? After all, it's on a school page.

Where does Jennifer Bradshaw live? NOT IN POLK COUNTY

We say go back to the original idea - art/music half time!!!
