Take a money order (they don't take cash or checks) for $65 to the courthouse in Cedartown and fill out the application. After you are done with that, they will send you over to the Sheriff's office, where you will hand over another money order (same reason) in the amount of $25 for a background check. Next you will wait anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months for your permit to be mailed to you. All monies are non-refundable. Hope this helps.

Gee's Bartow and Paulding, you walk in, do everything in one place and they mail you your license and you receive it in no more than 10 days

Are you allowed to go and get a permit outside the county you live in?

Well, that's Polk County for you. Nothing is easy in this county. Except for selling drugs....

I thought they finally got in a live scan at the court house so they can do the prints in house. Also rumored that they now take cash instead of money orders. Might be a good idea to call and find out what ya really need before going up there.

Entered the main courthouse building and had to go through a metal detector. Went in to probate court 01/19/2011. No wait. They wanted to see DL. Paid $75 dollars cash (can only be cash). Filled out forms. Most things seemed to be updated with "weapons license." They treated it like new all over again, not like a renual.
Did not ask for SSN or job info. They did not ask to see my current "GFL" either. I am not certain but I think one of the forms did have a spot for SSN but I left it blank and they didn't say anything, but I'm not certain about this. Anyway, a probate court employee did the prints in the office on a small livescan machine, no ink. Ink for the one print actually for the GWL. My GWL came in the mail January 27, 2011. It was dated January 25, 2011.

Strange that they charge so much. It's less than $50 in Fulton county.

Is that for a concealed carry license or just a weapon permit?

I know you have to go to the county you live in.

I have a stupid question but Iv asked several cops and get differnt answers. With a permit can you just carry a gun on your side and in your car with it loaded? I mean I know I wouldnt walk into the bank with it on my side but how does that work?

There is no such thing as a concealed carry license in Ga. You can get a Georgia Weapons License and carry concealed anywhere that the law allows. Please check with the site listed above for current regulation as it has changed recently. Please be aware that many of the local police think they know the new regulations but really only make it up as they go along.

Might be a good idea to print out the current regulation and keep a copy in the glove box, wallet or purse....then whip the thing out when they start "making it up"....

It would also be a good idea to learn your rights on when to use a weapon. Most people would say that when someone is trying to harm you, "blow them away" and that is a good time to use it but there may also be a time when you can help someone else, such as a gas station employee being held up or your friend being robbed. If you know the laws you can help anyone. If you dont know the laws you can do jail time for just trying to do what's right.
