congratulations to Safeway. As an almost daily shopper there i am sure it will take time for me to get used to the new store but i know i will learn it quickly. I will be there at the 'preview party'. It will be nice when they complete the parking lot but i understand the construction issues.
whatever

Hopefully New Spleaf's prices will come down to earth because of the opening.

Oh thank goodness. Now we can buy cheap food made from faaaaaaaaaaaaaar away. Monsanto is estatic, another warehouse to peddle their gmo crops. People will buy anything and put it in their bodies as long as it's cheap and containg high fructose corn syrup.

With New Leaf right down the way, the choice is readily available...local food for a premium price, or crap high fructose trucked in from Texas for pennies on the dollar.

Finally!

I'd still like to see another grocery store on the westside though. I'm not crazy about New Leaf, more of a Shopper's fan.

I've been to Whole Foods twice since they opened - glad there's another choice but if I'm going to pay those prices, I'd rather go to Shopper's. Besides, I like the cheese selection at Shopper's better, and didn't find WF produce very tasty in comparison to Shopper's.

Still, Safeway's selection and prices on nonfood products is decent.

This is a false choice. I shop at Safeway and I don't buy anything with high fructose corn syrup in it, and not all food at New Leaf is locally grown.

Wow Mike, nice justification. How's this:

New Leaf gets everything they can on their shelves from local sources. The rest is the best options available.

Safeway gets everything they can as cheaply as they can from Monsanto and friends. Not everything has High Fructose Corn Syrup in it, just most.

Again, you decide which type of business you want to support. Walk out of Safeway with a bag and we know what type of America you chose to support.

That's your choice as where to shop. New Leaf is way to expensive and did not need a new store. The old one was fine and I am sure more cost effective. As for the westside in general needing stores such as Safeway and New Leaf, if it were not for the students supporting these businesses the local population would not be enough to keep both afloat. Now as for the a ss that owns the hardware store I hope that p u ck goes belly up.
Thanks

The old one was SMALL, CRAMPED, and had a much more LIMITED selection. Not to mention the parking lot from HELL. And if you wanted to eat your sandwich there, there were three or four crusty tables right out by the cars.

The new store is much nicer in every way, and it's actually got the selection and seating to be a good lunch place. And I think it's drawing more business, which is, after all, the POINT.

good gosh you are not the only person who thinks about these things. Most of us DO think about these issues. Most of us are able to go into ANY store and make wise decisions based on these questions/comments you are posing. Hopefully you will have a more mature understanding of free choice when you graduate from Junior High School.

why would anyone ever shop here with a New Leaf just down the road? what could be more important than nourishing your body with wholesome foods? supporting a local business and local farmers that practice sustainable farming....

I am sure that both Safeway and Whole Foods appreciate the Sentinel's puff pieces. Safeway is OK for toilet paper, cleaning products, discounted Fosters Farms chicken, good deals on some cereals and juices and some fruits and vegetables. Stay out of the center aisles to avoid the junk food. I've been to Whole Foods once and found it to be too pricey. Otherwise, I go to Trader Joe's a couple of times a month -- mainly to get bread, dried fruit, cheese and yogurt.

a good example of someone who's either plain ignorant or is in denial over Monsanto like companies and the "food" that is sold through Safeway. We live in one of the few places in America that has markets like New Leaf .... you'd be a fool not to buy your food their.

try educating yourself on the food process:

You know Dave, sometimes people just don't care.
Unfortunately if Safeway has better prices on what someone needs these days we shop where we get the best deal, locally grown or not.

Anyways, why do you care so much? Do you work for N.L. or something?

Is is not funny that when safeway wanted to redo there mission street store they chose to use a rocklin and salinas based company, and yet no one raises a fuss, when a hotel is proposed the developers and community can't agree if we should get local or out of town unions. I think its funny that safeway slipped under the radar using non local contractors. I think the firefighters is the most help santa cruz companies have done on the new safeway

look, this new Safeway will have many of the same brands as New Leaf. If I can't get it at Safeway, I'll try NL, but the important thing, to me, is supporting the brands, and keeping them in business, wherever I buy them.

New Leaf has better tasting fruits and veggies, and organic eggs. Safeway has bread that doesn't go stale after one day, speadable peanut butter, and meat with fat in it. I'll shop both places.

a criminal ? no, an idiot ! look, if you've reached mid life and are still eating foods with High Fructose Corn syrup and hydrogenated oils you're a total idiot.... most food sold at Safeway is full of these ingredients and by shopping there you send a message of support to Safeway that selling these products is OK ... it's not, it's KILLING America.
there is ZERO excuse for ignorance in this day & age of the internet.

How about food that actually TASTES good. I bought some "organic" cream cheese at New Leaf. BLAND. Philadelphia cream cheese is so much better. Also they dont sell stuff like cheetos pop tarts and doughnuts at New Leaf. Imma die anyway [likely of a bullet, knife or reckless driver in diz town]. Why eat healthy?
