Whatever punishment is chosen still won't be enough to replace Fawzi Ghanim's life," his best friend, Nathan Haynes, 18, said as he urged Allawas to impose the harshest sentence available.
a good defense attorney could use that statement as a threat to his client.

A threat, What are you talking about???! This was a heartbroken teen, as well as the victim's family talking to the judge at time of sentencing. It's called a victim's impact statement and is part of every trial where there is injury or death. Do you think no punishment will bring this 18 year old kid back from his cold, dark grave? What would you approved of, his family saying instead, that it's o.k., boys will be boys, let's just forget about it? I hope you don't meet Aaron Preston in a little parking lot one day, you may have a different prospective on your last statement!
