A bill passed yesterday by the NYS legislature would criminalize "aggravated harassment" of a police officer making it a felony to, in the words of the accompanying press release, "harass, annoy, or threaten a police officer while on duty."

Repeat... a felony to annoy a cop. This is the most absurd, and will be the most abused law in NY State. This is nuts.

Not a felony to annoy a cop. A felony when you first subject him to unwanted physical contact (kick, punch, spit, push) with the intent to harass, annoy, or threaten. So don't worry you mope, you can still call cops names and annoy them, just don't make physical contact while doing so.

This law is going to be abused by cops. All they need is one more law to enforce their will. This is nuts.

This law was passes because of their union!

What makes a cop a more valuable than any of the taxpayers who are being raped on their taxes to pay for this inequallity?

talk about an absolute abuse of power!

Absolutely. This law will be open to interpretation by cops. They will no doubt apply it for tons of circumstances, and as a form of reverse harassment. If I was poor in NYS, I would expect this law to be used against me.

You know that what is construed as annoying by the cops may be a legitimate line of questioning by the citizen, to understand their rights.

It's time to reevaluate who we are electing to the legislature, and allowing to pass legislation that erodes our freedom.

I respect law enforcement and one of my closest family members is in law enforcement. But this is pure BULL$#!% This was set up on purpose so that anyone video taping a cop doing wrong can be told they are harassing an officer and charge them with a felony. I don't know about anyone else or my fellow republicans but this big brother control is getting out of hand.

It will be used indiscriminately at a cop's discretion to silence a citizen that disagrees with him. Our rights are being eroded daily by federal, state and local governments. Time for the citizens to take back their rights, and start voting out dems or republicians that don't properly represent us. Tighten up DWI laws instead. Kill somebody and you do time. Non-negotiable.
