I guess this would bring a whole new meaning to the phrase
"fallen trooper".

"Coming soon to your local sheriff: 18-ton, armor-protected military fighting vehicles with gun turrets and bulletproof glass that were once the U.S. answer to roadside bombs during the Iraq war.

The hulking vehicles, built for about $500,000 each at the height of the war, are among the biggest pieces of equipment that the Defense Department is giving to law enforcement agencies under a national military surplus program.

For police and sheriff’s departments, which have scooped up 165 of the mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles, or MRAPS, since they became available this summer, the price and the ability to deliver shock and awe while serving warrants or dealing with hostage standoffs was just too good to pass up….

An Associated Press investigation of the Defense Department military surplus program this year found that a disproportionate share of the $4.2 billion worth of property distributed since 1990 – everything from blankets to bayonets and Humvees – has been obtained by police and sheriff’s departments in rural areas with few officers and little crime."

Looks like one less storm trooper to man the death star ...

N.Y. State Troopers are for the most part are just N.Y. State Revenuers. Just sitting on the highways looking to write a ticket.

The main reason for the wars we are in. It is all just an excuse to hide the real purpose for the creation of all these military vehicles, spy equipment, and drones. None of this crap is being developed or built to fight terrorism or keep soldiers safe. It is all just to fight citizens and keep their captors safe. All the clueless masses huddling into their camps of democrat and republican both clamoring for more government intervention into the lives of the populous are completely blind to it.

I don't understand why the troopers would be training for this kind of thing anyways, is it their job???
Isn't it the job of Firemen to do this type of rescue??
I always thought Police enforce laws, and firemen rescue people.
Maybe they should get Border Patrol to do this type of training, as maybe one day an illegal Canadian would be at the bottom of that cliff hiding from authorities?

I'd rather have Troopers rescuing people from danger than sitting around writing tickets on the Thru-way. After all aren't police supposed to protect and serve? Sounds like a rescue of any type would fall into that category.

No, I think your wrong.

Sever and Protect doesn't sound like "rescue".

Repelling and Cliff Climbing is considered a fun sport by many Americans, and I'm sure a group of 10 Highly Paid Troopers would enjoy nothing more then to spend a beautiful sunny day in a beautiful park repelling and climbing down a cliff, and if one of those troopers has the wife that is a big wig Trooper Commander who can make it all happen then great for them.
But it should be the job of troopers to rescue people down a cliff. The 10 troopers could be doing a lot of other things then this, like giving speeding tickets on Lake Ave.
Like looking for drug dealers in the burbs, investigating unsolved murders, and like surveillancing Maggie Brooks and her crew.

You do realize other than the speeding tickets those things are handled by investigators and not the average patrolman. How in the world saving someone from a deadly situation is not protecting and serving is beyond comprehension. I'm sure it's a waste of time when they are training in first-aid and CPR as well. Shit, that's what E.M.T. crews are for. Think as molasses in Antarctica.

The one thing that jumped out at me from that article was the guy did not have any safety straps on. You'd think in a training exercise that safety would be #1. Nobody should be dying in a training exercise.

One less egregiously overpaid Trooper. Forgot, now the state will compensate his widow with huge bucks. What a racket.
