Losing power in a storm is one thing, but residents in the Park Avenue area were surprised when they received a letter from RG&E saying electricity would be turned off late Monday night to replace an ... Full Story

RGE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT CUSTOMERS. JUST FALL BEHIND IN YOUR BILL; YOU WILL SEE WHAT THESE SHARKS ARE REALLY LIKE.

This happened to me when I owed an old (1870's) rather drafty house on Linden Street, in the South Wedge. It was a non-event ... RG&E actually got the work done well before 5am and the house never got that cold ... and it was a 20 degree night. I'd rather have them do the work overnight while I'm asleep than during the day when it disrupts traffic and daily lifestyles.

Its not going to be that big of a deal. Your houses (well insulated or not) will hold the heat for the duration of the outage. Remember, its an electrical outage, not a gas outage!. Getting it done under planned conditions will be a heck of a lot better than if it fries.. then you will freeze for a long long time.

You are contractually obligated to pay them for their service. They're under no obligation to just GIVE electricity to you. It's people like you who make it harder for responsible customers to be taken seriously when we have problems. Recently I had a legitimate problem with my bill and the "customer service representative" treated me like I was a liar trying to scam the company. She should have reserved that treatment for YOU.

This is why I love living in a village that has their own electric. Electric is dirt cheap. Highest heating bill for a 3br apartment...$80. Lowest was $20.

If you think RG&E is bad, move to Florida and put up with FPL!

When you loose power from say a Hurricane, they don't restore the power until trees are trimmed near all the lines, now this is all good, but if they trimmed them on a regular basis, the power might not have gone out from branchs falling on the wires!
And then every time that happened, it was at least 1 week to restore the power...

So you would rather loose your power for say three or four days because the cable needed to be replaced but too many people complained about losing service for a couple hours? Preventative maintance is just that, to prevent a problem before it happens.

They gave you plenty of advanced notice of the outage. Wear long johns and put an extra blanket on your bed. If your that worried about it, stay at a motel 6, they'll leave the light on for you.

Vera,
You see how they treated you ? and you were legit, that is, i'm sure, Tony's point - no matter what the issue may be, many at RGE treat their customers like we are trying to get something for free - i believe they act like this because we are stuck - we have no where to go. I know when my husband lost his job for abit, we were hurting as well, I had one person treat me as if i was a piece of crap, I called again and was treated with respect and we worked something out until we got back on our feet. This can happen to anyone - health issues/illness, job loss, death, at anytime anyone of RGE's customers may have a time in their lives that we need to have just alittle help - but many are rude there. All i know is that I wished hard that I could move at that point to Spencerport or Fairport and deal with their electric companies, which i may add are MUCH cheaper. All i do is deal with it and know deep down that someday, those lovely representatives will need help someday and i hope they are treated the same way - it may take years - but what goes around comes around - treat people like crap - it will come back at ya

I am another RGE customer that thinks there customer service is rotten. I've never been late on a payment but when I selected another company for my Gas/Electric through the Voice Your Choice Program their attitude really changed. Mean, rotten, disrespectful, very unhelpful. Both times I had to call itís because RGE messed up the bill (their part of the bill)! Each time they gave me the run around until each time I had to talk to a supervisor to work the problem out and have THEM correct it. My point being you do not have to be late on a payment to get RGEís disrespectful customer service.

i just read the full story and to be honest, at least they forewarned everyone. Middle of night isn't much of a problem, add more blankets and have a back-up alarm - but i DO still feel that their telephone representatives need to be replaced - they can be rude, but i won't repeat my prior post - but just bundle up and snuggle - at least you were warned, imagine if you weren't - now that would stink

Yeah, I hadn't thought about that. I'm sure that's definitely part of it. But I'm willing to bet their instruct their CSRs to treat every customer like they're lying. The lady who I dealt with said "we'll give you a break this one time because you've paid on time every other month". Well you'd THINK if I was clearly a responsible customer, they could've at least TRIED to believe my situation. But no, she had to treat me like a misbehaving child. If there were other energy options in the city, RGE would probably go under faster than you can say "the customer is always right".

How about having a confirmed appointment with HEAP due to a job loss and having a VERY NASTY RGE employee show up unannounced at your door in the middle of winter to "shut you off for non-payment"? I asked for 5 minutes to call customer service to remind them that I had an appt, but that IGNORANT RGE employee shut me off anyways and when he left, he said" and you have a nice day too, m'am" (smothered with sarcasm). A little competition would humble these morons!

Why should they care about someone who doesn't pay their bills ?

Eric,
those who try to get away with not paying for anything, you may be right, but please read the above posts. I don't think anyone who has posted on this subject are those lazy types. Sometimes others may get behind due to an unforeseen circumstances that anyone would not want to deal with, some may just have issues with their bill, which can happen to anyone. The point here is that some of RGE's representatives treat paying customers (no matter if late or on time) like crap. No reason to. They should review history, if always late and had shut-offs - fine, but if its out of their control and people may need alittle assistance, no reason to be rude, because all it takes is an illness or loss of job and guess what - they can be that person on the other side asking for alittle understanding and time - or courtesy to the customer when asking about a concern on a bill. I agree with Vera - give us a company that is completely separate from RGE with good customer service - i'd be history. Just like frontier - now that Time warner offers phone service, i'm sure they are not as rude, or even cell phone service - if we have choices - we look for good prices AND good customer service.
