I have been an avid bicyclist for over 40 years have never been hit by a car but have had some close calls. I have not been hit because I ride against traffic so I can see what is coming at me. In light of the Scerbo Merkyll trial I wonder if the Woman on the bicycle was riding against traffic would she have seen this idiot Wheeling towards her and had time to move off the shoulder? As for me a few times I have had to move off the shoulder into a lawn because of some idiot texting or playing with their radio and swerving into the shoulder I was riding on, had I been going with traffic I wouldn't have seen them coming and surely had been hit.

Which leads me to the Officer this morning at a traffic light on my way to work that told me I was riding on the wrong side of the road. I asked him how often he rides a bike, I was told be quiet and just get on the other side of the road.

That seems to be the prevailing and arrogant attitude of law enforcement - no explanation, just a demand for compliance (with their interpretation of events).

I, too, ride against traffic. I have been stopped twice, once by a Monroe County deputy and once by a RPD officer. Both insisted I follow the flow of traffic, with no explanation offered.

The deputy said "Do as I say, I don't have to explain it". So much for understanding their convoluted thought process.

The law is to ride with traffic, even though facing traffic may seem safer.
I break the law also by riding on the sidewalks when no one is around. Always yield to the pedestrians.
Because of the deep dip in the asphalt at the drains along the curb, I have to ride a foot or two into the traffic lane which has made for some near misses.
Bicycle traffic is being made safer downtown by adding a lane for us on some streets. The intersections are still the most dangerous.

Interesting, I too have told my children when they were old enough to ride bikes out of our neighborhood to go against traffic and pay attention to the on coming cars. I was unaware that their was a certain direction as to ride with traffic as I am not an avid bicycler. I just read the NYS laws on the matter and they suggest going with the flow and having mirrors on your bike to keep watch of what is coming behind you. Yeah thats what I want my kids paying attention to whats behind them and not looking forward LMAO who writes these laws some fat politician who couldn't ride 1 mile without having a heart attack?

<quoted text> Because it is the law, NYS recognizes bicycles as a motor vehicle and must abide by all NYS traffic laws, stop signs, traffic devices, hand signals, horn or a bell and lights during dusk, because unfornitualy NYS recognizes bicycles as motor vehicles so you idiots can ride in the road you must obey all traffic laws that includes going with the flow of traffic, its illegal to drive a 4 wheel vehicle aka a car down the wrong side of the road and you should be ticketed for not following NYS law. if you don't like having close calls get a car or walk or ride on a side walk and stop impeding traffic.
I am pretty sure they were talking about riding off to the side on the shoulder towards on coming traffic not down the middle of the road as you are suggesting. Also there are many places in the suburbs and country with no sidewalk and only the shoulder of the road to use and in those cases I would absolutely face traffic.

Given a choice I bet Heather Boyem would have loved the benefit of seeing Scerbo coming at her instead of him ramming her from behind unexpectedly. But hey she was following the law.

Consider that going against the flow of traffic will increase the net impact speed with an oncoming vehicle by 20-40 mph.
You think you may be able to move out of the way if you see it coming, but many times there is nowhere else to go and time is short. You can't just jump the curb. It's a 'What If'.
I have ditched my bike and landed in the grass before when I thought that a collision was imminent.
Always wear a helmet and make sure that you have lighting or at least reflectors on your bicycle.

Thanks for making the case. Screw the law, I will not be told which lane to ride in. Civil disobedience. My life (to me anyway) is worth more than some cop's/legislator's opinion... that likely doesn't ride. This real life versus perception. I'll risk being a criminal.

By the way, my bike has very bright signalling LEDs front and rear. You can see it easily from 200-300 feet.

Could it be the officers don't even know why we drive with our backs towards the barreling down on traffic going 55-65 mph and trusting they see us? Some laws are archaic and need revamping. This would be one of them. I ride looking at traffic and until they figure out how to keep they drunks and drugged, the Texting Tommy's, and the Cellphone Susie's' off the road, I'll take responsibility for my own life thank you very much. Think I'd get longer jail sentence than Scerbo and Merkel if I was arrested? Hmmmmmm......probably. Gotta make examples of we the lawbreakers!

You are obviously not a cop because most of the cops I know personally have really loud pipes on their Harley's

Yeah watch the potholes in front of you while watcing for any cars possibly careening towards you in your mirror. Makes sense doesn't it? I ride and my spouse and I will have bets on whether the driver of a weaving car coming towards us from a distance is texting or cellphone. And most of the time, it's one or the other. And we get the dirty look if we yell something! The "back to traffic" doesn't allot you this opportunity. I don't do anything in life that places a potential danger behind me. Come on. Even our Neanderthal relatives knew that.

It's sort like how the canal needs a guardrail and the piers need more lights and all oak trees within 50 feet from a road should be cut down.
How do you turn a conversation about bicycle saftey into an anti white statement just sad. Good job making whatever race you are trying to represent look stupid.

Must bicyclists and in-line skaters ride with traffic?

The law requires that bicyclists ride and in-line skaters glide with traffic [Section 1234(a), NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law]. Bicycling and skating against traffic are leading causes of crashes. Moving with traffic makes bicyclists and in-line skaters more visible, and their movements more predictable to motorists. Riding or gliding with traffic also prevents interference with the flow of traffic and pedestrians.

Your relevance disappeared at "the whites". If you truly have a point, try not being so ignorant. Bike safety and stopping drunk driving knows no color.

Why don't you start by craking down on some of the corrupt cops that make the rest of you look bad ... it's a bigger problem than people that ride their bikes on the wrong side of the road

This thread, which is relevant to bike riders, is subverted to white guys vs black guys. What is wrong with some of you neanderthals?

Thanks to the posters that had a serious opinion. It has been informative, because this is a problem/danger that impacts all bike riders.

I was following this thread as it was informitive and dealt with one of my favorite hobbies WTF would make you turn it into a racial issue. I see most of the threads on topix become racial but this thread was about Bicycling. What is wrong with you? I will assume you are an angry african american since you attacked white people and no one was talking about race. If you have children or nieces and nephews that look up to you and want a better life for them, Ask yourself today why did jump in a normal discussion and turn it racist?
