RPD Chief Says Community Helped Police Make Homicide Arrests
Police Chief James Sheppard is crediting the community with helping police make arrests in several homicide cases which took place within hours of each other.
Martin Jones, 17, and Isaiah Rollins, 15, were arrested Wednesday and charged with killing Curt Vallentin, 52.
Police say sometime between September 29 and 30, Jones and Martin beat Vallentin to death with their firsts, a chair, stick and bottle inside 20 Orlando Street. According to court paperwork, both teens admitted to beating the victim during a video recorded interview with police.
Chief Sheppard says the more the community gets involved the easier it is to solve a crime.
"I also want to highlight that so far this year this is the 23rd case that has been solved out of 32, and just phenomenal work that they've done," Sheppard said. "We hope that the work we get from the community and their involvement helps set the trend, because over the years, the lack of community involvement leaves a lot of these cases open, leaves a lot of families in distress and cannot come to closure and the more that we close, the fewer cases we will have to address."
Jones and Rollins pleaded not guilty and are being held without bail in the Monroe County Jail. They'll be back in court Oct. 29.
Rochester Police also arrested two men in connection with a homicide on Michigan Street in June just hours after arresting Jones and Rollins.
Roberto Quinones, 19, and Alex Ortiz, 20, are facing second degree murder charges. The two men are accused of killing Eugene Wade, 24, of Rochester.
Police responded to Michigan Street for a report of a male shot and when they arrived, they found Wade dead in a car from a gunshot wound.
Both Quinones and Ortiz pleaded not guilty in court Friday and are both due back in court next week. They will be held without bail.
Great hunting RPD keep up the good work.
"the 23rd case that has been solved out of 32,"
That leaves at least nine animals still being hunted for this years murders alone and the RPD never gives up the hunt.
