All taxpayers are aware of the abuse in welfare! Our political leadership fails to remedy this conflict due to shortage of case workers. It is claimed that there is a high percentage of illegal welfare recipients, and yet due to workload - case workers can not investigate/followup on all recipients.

Well, here is a remedy to the conflict/s. Our political leadership should start a monetary reward program for reporting abuse.

In the past 30 yrs, I have personally come across individuals that was receiving benefits illegally! At todays rate, welfare pays $200 per dependent in food stamps, cash assistance starts at $400 per month and full medicaid health insurance. For many welfare has become a way of life and generation to generation.

Welfare should be utilized by the needy or those not able to work, and not laziness..! New York can
save millions monthly..!

We always see in the news whites in the burbs getting arrested for welfare fraud. Maybe the problem is that the case workers or investigators in the city are only investigating the blacks and not the whites who are really ripping the system off.?????
I'm sure the people you ran into the were stealing were white, huh??

Yes, they were white - but lazy to work and would rather party... On the other hand overall this is minimal.

Lets get real Rhonda, the highest percentage of ethnic groups on welfare are minorities and foreigners. As a matter of fact last year I personally became disabled due to respiratory health conflicts. Which means I had dealings with social services to help with medical costs due to inability to absorb health insurance and prescription costs! On two occasions I had to visit social services personally. I can honestly say out of a possible 200 people, there was only a handfull (5) that was white.
1) There were many minorities that is capable of working, was single and young applying for benefits.
2) There were many standing in line and had their dependents with them. As a responsible adult one would agree that an adult would curb their child bearing, especially when they can't afford it. Of course many receiving benefits knows it pays more for more dependents, thus this is a form of abuse!

Fraud comes into play when the recipient violates the system ie; having live-ins in same household, drawing food stamps while working, working under the table - not reporting income, etc!

If the highest percent of people on welfare are blacks and you say the people arrested stealing are white, what does that tell you???
Whites steal at a very higher percent then any other race.

Rhonda, I think you are reading and interpreting what you want. The point being made is that there is a double standard in the welfare system. Now, I am not being prejudicial, however, the benefits are detained for a longer period of time - for those that are not a minority or in todays economy from the working class!

I used my own experience as an example - going from working class to disability via social security! In summary; getting assistance from NYS was like talking to the wall due to difficulties in qualifying - owned property, retirement funds, etc., and this was just get to Medicaid assistance! This means any ethnic group from the working class plain and simply will any benefit/s - unless flat broke.

Once again not being prejudicial, the abuse exists for all ethnic groups - blacks, whites, etc! Now, lets look at the high percentage that are physically on the benefit. Welfare is well known for being a way of life - for the lazy or uneducated! This includes generation to generation recipient - from parent to child and continuing to their offspring/s! As any intelligent person would know or should practice - controlling child bearing especially knowing they can't provide..!

The welfare or public assistance was originally setup to assist the needy! The abuse/fraud consists of:
1) Child Bearing - Sole purpose for more in monetary benefits; food stamps, medical and shelter.
2) Long Term Recipients
3) Households Under The Program - Opposite Sex Adult/s Live-Ins
4) Laziness - Ability To Work And Not Health Restricted

Robert Whitney is telling the truth. There needs to be more scrutiny for people who apply for benefits. I do know that DSS makes some who apply for assistance look for work.

I didn't want to put my business out there as it is embarrasing, but I know first hand what Robert is saying. I too went to DSS two years ago to apply for housing assistance and was turned away because I was about to receive unemployment compensation. I had just lost my job at that time and had filed for unemployment and it was taking awhile to go through. I still had to pay bills and had to swallow my pride, so I went in to "beg" DSS for one or two months help with rental payments. I basically got the middle finger as in I was told to wait for my unemployment payments to kick in. I was sad at that time because I didn't know what to tell the landlord, but I saw an African family walking out of one of the DSS offices all smiles. I vowed never to put myself in that situation again, where I had to beg for help from them. As Robert stated, they will not help those who need it for a short time, only those who they can control for the duration of time(decades I guess).

i have been trying to report welfare fraud here in cleveland all morning and find anyone to give a report to. i don't want to do it online, cause i really don't know how confidential that would be. i called and talked to someone and they said i have to have the person's case number or social security number. how am i supposed to know that? i tried to save the state $800.00 a month, but got tired of jumping through hoops.

You asking some of these posters to "comprehend points" is like an Alien from outer space trying to communicate with them using garbled sounds. Wasted time, effert and energy.

Yanno every one I talk to says I qualify for food stamps and HEAP. These are people that use the system to better themselves without having to find a job they can do and ARE able to do, they just wanna live off someone else. This one lady I met from Newark, NY said she'd take me down to the welfare office and help me get the food stamps. The trouble is that I don't need the food stamps as I am doing fine without them, I also have money saved a way to buy fuel oil for my hot water heat and don't need to have someone pay that for me too. I guess I have more morals than smarts cause I could be making a better life for myself by getting into the welfare dole but I wouldn't feel right about doing that.. She said that she'd take the money if I didn't wanna use it for my food IF I knew someone that was cheating the system, I'd probably have to talk myself into ratting them out because they may be helping someone else while they are doing it themselves, I have learned to live within my means and have a comfortable life, have money to buy the things I like to buy and save some for the rainy days when I really need something once in a while that I don't use everyday..
IF I was paying up the wazoo in taxes like Tom Galisano was at 15 grand a day and were funding these scofflaws then I might be able to put the screws to them and feel like I did the right thang.. I really don't need a lot of money and my kids/grands are all solvent and will be able to attend RIT and the U of R if they wanna.. Other than driving a flashy car, I don't think any of them care what they would have in the bank as they will be extremely well off when I die and they become 30 years old according to their trust funds that I set up 20 years ago when they were being born. And if they can't survive on the 7 figure bank account, then I must had messed up somewhere teaching them the value of a dollar and how to use it to their best advantage.
It would be nice to see the cheaters that live off the welfare system have to pay back all the illegally gotten money by having to get a job and making enough to support themselves while paying back all the monies that they stole from welfare.. Even put a cap on how much they get a month and not based on how many bodies are in the household either, more kids would not increase the amount you are allowed and that would put a stop to that practice really quick too..
Paying the landlord every month would be up to the recipients, NOT welfare directly, this would kill the system whereby the landlord gives back some money to the tenant because they charged $400 a month when it was really only $200 a month and that gave the tenant more to spend on other things. The best deal would be to give the welfare moms a lump sum $500 a month and make them liable to pay for the things they wanted/needed to survive, and not give them any more emergency funds when they ran short.. If they DIDN'T pay the light bill THATS their problem, they spent the money on something else and now have to live in the dark until the 1st of the month without cable TV and Internet.. It might even make them into being better citizens and care a little about the money they receive. Have them make up their own budget every month and stick by it.. Also make all the welfare payments identical in the state and or country, No more coming to NY because they pay more than Pennsyltucky or Ohio does. And make it a rule that you have to live in the state for at least a year before collecting welfare money. Then if you play the lottery and win some money, you'd have to pay all the money back to the state thet you received. Start off with a figure that is around $2.00 lower than the minimum wages so as to keep people from quitting their jobs to live off welfare.. I wonder how many characters I can use before I have to use another posting! Con't

Welfare abuse existsbecause BiG Government fails. Families, neighborhood, communities, churches, local orgaizations should be caring for people in need. People are held accountable by people they know, and people who actually know these people can vet them properly and know their needs. The farther away the help the more corruption, the more wasted dollars. I am thinking that for every dollar we give the government to help the needy maybe 10 cents goes to actually support these people. If you give your neighbor, family, friend a dollar for a loaf of bread, they get the whole dollar. We need the change the system back to local, it is our only hope to break this cycle of abuse and worse yet dependency,(i.e. enslavement). Can we talk about the corrupt education system that is not educating our children properly,(dispite higher that normal monies being pumped into the system), keeping these children stuck in the system.

I do not own a home because I cannot afford a home. I am in a program that helps me fix my credit, and I set a specific amunt of money asside for a down payment(when I'm ready). Many have thought that they could afford nice big homes. And many are living with Grandma now, and doing exactly what it is that I do(pay rent).

Anything else you wanna judge, buddy?
