And why not? It's a legitimate medical problem that needs care, therapy, and eventual surgery!

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I want to be a chick, so let the taxpayers foot the huge bill for surgery. That makes sense.

Hey, why not buy them some new outfits to go with their new life. It's free money.

Tens of thousands just for the surgeries, plus counseling and life-long hormone treatments.(Just Google it for a sampling of costs).

You gotta be kidding me, right?

Is this the biggest problem we have in the city?

Will this really improve the quality of life for 99.9999% of the city residents?

Schooling, crime, economic growth, neighborhood improvements.... and the most important activity for this city hall is to spend time and money on converting city employees from one gender to the other???

Really?

Warren has to the the dumbest person ever to step foot into city hall.

How embarrassing to be so clueless.

First, how do you get an enhanced medical plan? Secondly, why not include out of state relatives, family friends, maybe neighbors within a two block radius.

Just give away our tax money for ABSOLUTELY UNNECESSARY ELECTIVE SURGERY.

Normally, I'd be on your side, But I'm a Transexual and I know what it is.
First off, very few will be affected. How many TSes do you think that there are? It's pretty rare, way less than one percent. Last night I was talking to a SRS surgeon form the Phila. area and the TOTAL fee was $20,000. The average heart attack is much more than this. It's actually pretty cheap for an operation that lasts over 4-5 hours. You won't notice the cost in you taxes.

One other item, what does it cost, in ball park numbers, to get altered? I have a feeling this is a very long (translation: grossly expensive) process.

Big diff between heart attack and sex change surgery, she-male.
Life threatening conditions need to be addressed.
Having a dick-tomy or an add-a-dicktomy is not life threatening.
Pay your own way if you need some sort of kink surgery.
Freaks.

To you, It's a big difference! To the person going through it, it's very real and life threatening. It can cause alcoholism, drug addiction, and or suicide.

Although you may feel that it creates a quality of life issue for you, it is still NOT life threatening. Itís still an ELECTIVE surgery ... pay for it out of your own pocket.
If I have a heart attack, my medical insurance pays for it, not the government.

One more point ... once you start taking government money for your health issues, the government then has a say in how you live your life ... because they have a vested interest in you.

Once they pay for your operation, they may decide who you can have sex with, and how often. After all, they paid for your sex change, how can they trust you not to damage thier investment with AIDS, VD or just excessive wear and tear from too much abuse.

You man say that I sound crazy, but look at Bloomberg's 16 oz soda campaign and it's relation to public financed health care ... remember the "strain on the system" argument!

Most mental illnesses can. Cosmetic surgery to satiate yourself shouldn't be payed for by anyone but yourself.
It is not a neccessary surgery.

sex reassignment surgery. Reminds me of same sex marriage. The only reason this has become legal is due to these degenerates going to college, obtaining these Masters/Phd's.

Get that higher education to change the way society thinks. all because of your book knowledge. It used to be considered a mental illness until folks without common sense started making decisions. This country is messed up due to the educated people.

As the world turns it continues off course.

The U of R did you a disservice if you seriously espouse that crap. Doubtful you are a UR (or college) grad. It is not degenerates going to college and getting book knowledge. What idiocy.

This surgery is available because surgeons can do it - and make a very good living customizing patients. It's a consumer demand item, elective surgery. I don't for a minute believe it solves drug problems, alcoholism or mental illness. Those are ancillary issues, and sex altering surgery can't fix them. In fact, I would wager that in many cases, it would ramp the other factors up.

This procedure should not be paid through insurance or city government. It's a line item that jacks up our insurance premiums. Someone has to pay for it.

First The MAN this is an expansion of the cities Insurance plan so it's NOT costing the city a penny extra so you and the other cavemen on here argument of how much it will cost the taxpayer are void and not actuate.

Second of the employees that work for the city how many would even need this coverage how many diagnosis transsexuals do you think work for the city ? I'd guess maybe one or two so tell me how does it hurt you or the city to add a rider to their policy that doesn't cost you or the city one extra penny, but yet makes it possible for someone who has a diagnosed medical condition for which the diagnosis treatment is sex change surgery. Just because you don't agree or believe in this condition is irrelevant you should think about the needs of someone else besides yourself. For the diagnosis transsexual who work for the city this is life changing necessary surgery that will allow them to be much more comfortable in the own skin and in turn do a better job at work and for you john Q taxpayer.... QED it's NOT all about you for your 411

Insurance companies add riders for major surgery, and just "it's on us."
