Letter: Move VA facility into Medley Centre

Jul 7, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

The current VA facility is overcrowded and has inadequate parking. A possible solution for both problems might be to move the VA Facility into Medley.

Why should the government be the major tenant in what is suppose to be private development? Once the PILOT is abolished the government will own the development soon enough.

Medley Centre used to be thriving like the other malls until it was ruined. It really is a shame

It was actually the constant muggings in the parking lots that contributed the most. No female shopper or family wants any part of that sort of environment

100% correct. Not an ounce of perception involved. Only facts.

Maybe they could make the mall a huge rec center for "inner city" kids. It,s on a bus line.

The truth is and the facts are that blacks and city folk were boycotting the Irondequoit mall for a few years for the racist treatment from the mall security and the greece police.
I'm sure the loss of the dollars from the city people and the black people that helped hurt the mall, but none of the racist want to think that.
They think that even tho half of the areas population lives in the city that a suburban mall could and would survive with out them.
I worked at both Greece Ridge and Irondequoit Mall J@J newsstand in the late '90s early 2000s and their was never a shortage of blacks doing nothing but causing trouble. They never were to be seen buying anything but grape huggies. Both malls had mostly black security guards, so take your racist treatment theory and blow yourself. The rare occasion they were confronted it was because they did nothing but loiter for hours on end.

There was always more crime in Marketplace and Greece then the Irondequoit mall.
Years ago the D&C did a story showing that.
And just recently the D&C did a story saying the rochester area can only support so many malls.
If we have 3 malls, we can only support a 4th if the areas population was to increase over 25 percent, and last I knew the population was decreasing.
The resident racist won't acknowledge the D&C article the investigated the crime at the mall.
As I recall it even looked into a cover-up of the crime stats.
Pure fear killed that mall.

Fear of the car break-ins,muggings,and teen fights that did in fact take over that place.

Yes you are correct, the FEAR crippled the place.
If it where reality, Midtown would have been doomed 30 years before......

The cops are at Target 9x out of 10 when I go there.Use your brain. Your logic here is flawed on so many levels I don't know where to begin. For starters the Mall when it was a mall was a prime target because of the possible value of stolen goods and the likely hood of not getting caught.Going and robbing people at a Target with very few cars or people at it, in a small concentrated area is low pay/high risk.So there is your reason.Never it was just blacks.

We can't forget to take into consideration the big groups of young thugs that congregated around the main entrances and intimidated people as they entered and exited

I worked there for 8 years. It went downhill for a lot of reasons. Crime was one.Marketplace and Henrietta can overcome that because of the draw they have being the only place you can find many of the offerings they have. Irondequiot Mall really should never have been built. It was just convenient because it was closer than the good malls.Once the mall slowed down the shadyness started happening. The convenience was lost. Might as well just go to the malls that have biggrr selections and Sears,J.C.Penny's,and Kaufmans that have the full selection and full departments that the other malls had.
As to the mall walkers they took up one small corner of the food court and most left by noon.

Let me clarify...they have as much of a right to be there as anyone, but when they aren't spending any money and are causing trouble it's an issue

First off, the mall doesn't have a Target IN it.
Second, I haven't seen one news story of Target even having any shoplifters or other crimes at it.
And the last time I heard of any mall having trouble in the parking-lots, was many different white guys and they were all incidents that occurred at the other 3 malls.
Do you want me to find you links of suburban whites that were committing crimes in mall parking-lots??? I bet you can't find one black one.
First off the mall does not exist. It is just a former mall.Just because Target is not connected to the FORMER mall does not change the fact that it is the only store on the same property as the former mall. The Sears and Kaufmans never have more than 30 cars in their combined lots. The Target is the only place besides IHOP that has any real flow.Your story link only points to supposed rape and car theft rumors that few ever heard of or believed. It ignores the the real problems of purse snatchings and car break-ins that did start happening after the mall slowed down. It was doing bad and these things put the nail in the coffin.

Exactly. These sort of things were what led to its ultimate demise. The muggings and such didn't make the paper frequently because they were so common after a while. Speaking of Target, I'd much rather shop there than the Hudson Ave Wal-Mart for a few reasons. I have to say though, I wonder what out-of-towners think when they stay at that hotel right there by IHOP/104 nowadays

I am sure that internet shopping had a lot to do with why ALL the malls are not doing so well.

You can get what ever you want, you used to be able to sidestep state taxes (not any more), and you can shop around for the best prices without walking around.

And, there is no threat of muggings with internet shopping.

What muggings???
The Cops said it, the D&C said it along with Rnews; the crime at the Mall was minimal and didn't come close to living up the hype being perpetuated by you.
How many times were you or your wife mugged there?

I'd love to see some links.

As for currently, there's 3 incidents listed there in the past week.
