After reviewing the footage, troopers reached out to a local online newspaper for help.

"I wanted to quickly identify the suspect to check the welfare of not only the one child but all three children," said Hanssel.

"Trooper Holly Hanssel gave me a call and asked me to come by Walmart," said Howard Owens, publisher of The Batavian.

Owens said he quickly posted a picture from the surveillance footage to his website.

"In the first hour that was up, that post was viewed by at least 4,000 people," said Owens.

People weren't just viewing the image.

"Fifteen to 20 minutes of it being posted, we had numerous calls coming into our dispatch at the State Police Batavia and the Genesee County Sheriff's dispatch," said Hanssel.

They helped State Police to identify the suspect.

"People really responded, which is exactly what we are after in a situation like this," said Owens.

Maybe Rochester police could learn something from this.
