Hmmm. the Monroe county superintendents of schools knew darn well that there was going to be a storm, but did nothing except put kids and teachers' lives at stake by keeping school open. The almighty state aid strikes again. Come on Channel 10, interview a few superintendents and ask them why they kept schools open during a snowstorm!

Every school around here was cancelled by 6:30 a.m., including the city schools. Some suburbs stayed open, but most were smart enough not to try and ship the kids home in the middle of the storm. I thought for once they got smart.

I have a question for you guys up north. When I was up there visiting yrs ago in the winter time and I mentioned something about schools closing when it snowed in the south, I was laughed at. I told them we dont have snow plows and such but they still thought it was weird that our schools close since the cities up there had all this snow removal stuff. so,,, why is schools and such closing in n.y now? what happened to all the snow removal equipment they bragged about back in the late 70's?

It depends on the forecast, sherri. This storm was worse than most by dumping a foot or more of snow in less than 12 hours' time. That's a little extreme even for us, although in some parts it's the norm, like up around Watertown and lake affect areas. When the forecast is like it was this time, and it being a Friday and all, it was easier and safer for schools to close before the storm began so they wouldn't be sending the buses out trying to get the kids home right in the middle of it. It's not a matter of snow removal at that point. It's a matter of less traffic on the roads so the plows can get the job done, and not putting the kids in unnecessary danger if we can help it.

However, you have to admit that a snow storm in the South is a bit different than one up here. Look at Las Vegas this week, virtually shut down by 3 inches!! We don't even bother to plow that, let the Man who put it there clean it up!!
