Great times there. Several groups come to mind. The workers and clientele had special personalities. Friday nights especially!Does anyone remember going to Ben's Cafe around 1968-1970? I am looking for a few people who worked there. There was a group that played there too, if anyone knows their names and/or where they are now. They were a popular band during that time and through the 70's in Rochester.
Does the mafia still exist in Rochester?

Anyone that makes threats on a thread is obviously a nobody. My grandpa was a street captain and is still alive and crazy as ever. As long as he's alive as far as I'm concerned so is the mob

now THAT'S funny shit!. A Captain. The Asians and the Russians own the streets now. The African community could have tossed the Italians years ago and missed their opportunity. They were stupid, infighting non-businessmen. The Russians had years of practice, when they got here, it was like taking candy from a babe. Heartless and calculating. The Asians are heartless and fast. A Captain! What a Hoot! |

How about the Stauds (Milton "Midge", Karl, Edward, George)who ran booze across the lake and owned the Rascal?

Lots of nonsense posted in this thread by too many wannabes. Back in the day, the city was a safer place, but it had little to do with the Mob or the Mafia, or whatever you want to call it. Even the guy who grew up in the 10th ward had it wrong. While it's true the areas around the clubs were safe, like the 44 Club on Lake and Tom's place on Lyell, all areas, with the exception of the 'inner-city,' were A LOT safer than they are today.
A few reasons for it: For the most part, the criminal class was still confined to the inner-city The cops had to deal with Saturday Night Specials, rather than stolen 9 mills with 15-round clips Al Skinner It's interesting to note that under the Obama Administration, the criminal class is now a protected, criminal class. |

If you gotta time machine, you're in luck. The players are dead, and the living relatives only know third hand stories that probably never happened. Wait a minute, what about Tanya Tucker? She dated one of the mob guys briefly. |

I took a pretty good beating from Torpey when I was in 8th grade. I stood there and took it. He was so viscious I thought he would kill me if I defended myself. The offense was walking on the wrong side of the street.
