Hello. My husband and I currently live in Buffalo, Ny but are seriously considering hopping on the 90 East and moving to Rochester. We are looking to buy a home and start having children. We have a few specific questions and want to hear from people that live in the city.

1. What do you like about the city?
2. What do you dislike?
3. If we move to Rochester where should we buy a home?
4. What are your thoughts on the school system?
5. How are the hospitals?

Overall, we want to be safe and want a decent quality of life! Thanks so much!:-)

Stop and check out Batavia.....half way between Buffalo and Rochester. Small city charms without all the negatives of big city living.

"ware"? and man that was one LONG run on sentence!!!

It looks like you "ware" a product of this terrible school district you write about.

1. What do you like about the city?

Everything. It's a lot like Buffalo, but cleaner, nicer, more convenient and healthier. Big city culture in a medium sized city.

2. What do you dislike?

The ghetto culture and the suburban planning within city limits (ie East Ave Wegmans, McDonalds and numerous gas stations on Monroe Ave and the plethora of parking lots downtown)

3. If we move to Rochester where should we buy a home?

Within city limits: Anywhere between Atlantic Ave and Mt. Hope (SE section of the city). Charlotte, Northland-Lyceum or Maplewood. In the suburbs: Brighton.

4. What are your thoughts on the school system?

City schools suck, but there are many options. Charter schools and other private schools are great. Suburban schools are some of the best in the country.

5. How are the hospitals?

Very nice. Strong is highly regarded.

Most people who post on topix are trolls and race baiters. I recommend you repost this thread here...

The city itself....depends on what part of the city. There are really nice areas and pure ghetto areas. What I don't like is that there is a lot of ghetto trash depending on where in the city you live/go. I wouldn't allow my child to go to city schools if they were the last schools in the entire USA. If I were to move here from somewhere else...I'd choose an area suburb. The hospitals are great. We have a medical school here so we get the best from all over the country/world coming here to study, intern, and many of them settle here.

The city is great, and there is always something going on. Look at any of the suburbs, and you'll find something in your price range. The hospitals are great, with Strong leading the pack.

Listen......Rochester has its downfalls like every city does. There are parts of the city that you do not want to live in or drive near. With that being said I have been a resident of the city for 6 years now and never have had ANY issues with violence or burglury etc... The city of Rochester boasts a lot of culture and some great dining. Rochester also has a ton of minor league sports teams from indoor and outdoor soccer and lacrosse teams, basketball team the red wings. There are lots of fun things to do in rochester don't be turned off by everyone's negative comments. You would hope people would have a little bit more pride in there home town. I would even go as far to say if your interested in hearing more join this site (free) and you can message me. My wife and I have lived here for 6 years now and love it very much. The only thing that has been said that is very accurate is the schooling is awful. But with that being said depending on your budget you could send your kids to private schools. They can be expensive but worth it. The one we are currently looking at it not that expensive when you compare what we are going to save by staying in the city tax wise, versus moving out of the city and having a 12k a year tax bill. It might make sense for us to stay in the city. Their are plenty of affordable suburbs around here as well, but my wife and I love the city atmosphere. let me know if you have anymore questions.

MY advice is ESCAPE NY .. go south or s/west . The North East is dead ...WELFARE STATE /TAXES/Draconian laws . Move to a place where schools actually educate and not indoctrinate .

We are leaving the state after school is over ..Fuck this place .We are leaving everything behind .NY has ruined us and many other's .

U will love RG&E all winter...Move somewhere warm and sunny ...
Rochester is a highly sprayed city <chemtrails> and we fluoridate the water , <heavy metal> so you are poisoned w/ heavy metals .

The negative list is endless unless u are rich and can live in Victor or farmington far from the Drug wars and Crime in Rochester ..

Libtard zombie city where people are in the matrix and could give a fuck about the abortion and murder every night .

If u like drugs and crime u will love the city life . Of course if you are white prepare for racial tension . THE BLACKS RUN THIS ZOO

Here is an honest response... if you have children and your jobs are demanding you to move to the Rochester area and you can afford better than 4k-7k taxes a year on a house you can put a 20K-50k deposit on then move to Henrietta, Brighton, Chili, Penfield, or Pittsford. That are suburbs of Rochester and provide a quality education and low enough crime rates that a caring parent would want to raise a child in. If your income is a bit less than suggested you can look at Gates, or Irondequoit. Having said that avoid the town of Greece, NY it is crime infested like a city but with high taxes.

And by all means if you have children and care about them do not reside in the City of Rochester. RCSD schools have among the worst graduation rate in the country, along with highest crime rates in the country, and only 9% of black males gaining a high school diploma. If your children are white and you move into the city it pretty much gaurentees them failure.

Just drive around the city and not just the Main St. downtown area and see for yourself what kind of life you want.

Take the advice of the previous poster who said " move south". This town's best days are behind it. I'm leaving the first chance I get.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in pittsford and bought my first house in the city. I used the money I had been saving since my first job when I was 15 for my down payment. For the record both my parents worked very hard to live in Pittsford so we could get a decent education. NOTHING has been handed to me and have worked for everything I have. I now own a successful business and am working on a second location. Hard work is the key. Life for me has not been easy by any means just because I happened to go to hightschool in Pittsford. I am thankful to my parents for working as hard as they did to afford to live there long enough to get us 3 children a decent education. As soon as I graduated my mom moved right out of Pittsford taxes are high. Their is nothing wrong with small "hick" towns either. Life is what you make of it and how you allow yourself to perceive it.

why come to NY?
the taxes are crushing, the gun laws are out of control, and with all the nanny state rules, you can't live free.
I'd be out of here too if my wife would let me move.

You got a nutty old woman too? I'm about kick mine to the curb over the same issue. I can honestly say that people who move here from other places typically love it for about the first 5 years. Then they become just as jaded and ambivalent towards the city as anyone born here. Rochester has great restaurants, cool museums, the jazz festival is decent,Lilac festival o.k.,theaters, and fair amount of expensive yuppie nightlife. The problem is all of this gets really old pretty quick and makes this place more of a great place to visit but does little for the quality of life for those who live here. Seriously how many times can you fork over $80 for a meal and then $80 a ticket to go see a play just to wind up back at home. Also the suburban sprawl is horrible here. You can dive in any direction for 45min. and you are still not out of the metro area. You just find yourself in a crowded suburb that is not much different from the place you just left.Drive a little further and your in another city that is just smaller and more run down. It takes at least a 3.5 hour drive to find yourself in an area that is even remotely the actual "country".
