I live in Robbinsville. Every day I pass what used to be a corn field on Richardson Road, between Ivanhoe and Edgebrook Road. For the last year-and-a-half the field has been plowed, there is nothing but grown over weeds and cat tails, poles coming out of the ground and encompassed by a 7 ft. fence. When I say "cat tails," I'm not sure of the proper name, but they are those long beige things that grow out of the ground near pollution sites, you've seen them in the Meadowlands, near the Philly airport, etc.

Does anyone know what is going on there? Could it be fracking?

Pollution has nothing to do with it. They're weeds or a type of grass and grow in wet, disturbed land areas. Cattails look similar to hot dogs, Long, Dark Brown and again, grow in wet, sunny areas, often with the 'beige' fluffy stuff I believe you're discussing.

In any case, it's a native plant that grows wild, and again, has nothing to do with pollution. It may be thought to grow only in polluted areas because it's one of the few plants resistant to pollutants, but I can assure you, is not an indication that pollution is present. It's just a really hardy plant. If you see the cattails, the one's that look like hot dogs - this would indicate a cleaner, less polluted environment. If I'm not mistaken, cattails are more sensitive to pollution. But, I could be wrong.
