Full story: TwinCities.com

A high-speed rail line between the St. Paul and Chicago moved one step closer to reality Thursday when the White House said it would provide seed money for the long-sought line.

There is nothing high speed about any of these rail systems.

If rail was so great, why did most passenger rail go out of business. It's nothing more than another billion dollar boondoggle brought to you by social engineering by the left for which will do nothing more than increase the deficit both locally and nationally.

Well the democratic liberals..(social engineers) are well on their way to destroying Mpls. as we know it. Letting the Chicago trash spill into the Twin Cities by way of rail is the beginning of the end to our quality of life here! If you think the bus lines screwed up the 'burbs..."you ain't seen nothin' yet baby"

That was before our other high speed means of communications and transportation,
Things such as our national highway system...before our airlines, and before social engineering took a hold in the liberal minds of our idiotic politicans, they think everyone should be giving the benefits of hard work and success, even if they didn't earn it. Spread the wealth around...that is what the idiot obama says...spread it around. Well, how does the hope and change work now...about as good as john cheatin edwards two America's. I guess edwards meant was two America's. one where you stay with and take care of your children and your cancer stricken wife, and the other America, where you go and mess around with your tramp girl friend...'till you knock her up!

What is the value proposition behind a 6 hour train ride to Chicago? It's barely faster than taking a car. It's too long to be a commuter line. You'll get to downtown Chicago, but have no transportation to the suburbs where all the corporate HQs have relocated. And how does it create 58,000 permanent jobs? It probably required some investigative journalism to find out so of course this article failed to mention it.(Great story, Dave!)

Guess there are a lot of eco-hippies with revoked drivers licenses anxious to put their hands in my pocket so they can go stare at The Bean in Millennium Park. Sorry, this bank is closed.

There is a reason why all the old railroad grades are now snowmobile trails.....nobody wants to ride trains. The welfare moms that are triple dipping Chicago,Milwaukee and Minneapolis welfare are already riding the double decker Mega Buses. Anyone else going to these cities needs a car to get to their destination in the suburbs anyway. The next elections cannot come soon enough to stop this insanity.

The high speed train takes 5 and 1/2 hours to get to Chicago. Amtrack does it in about 8 hours. I can drive it straight though in about 6 - 7 hours with stopping to pee and its a lot cheaper then the high speed train.

At this point the twin city to Chicago link is a far out second fiddle!. The grant was for $600,000. while Florida got a $ 1,25 Billion + grant for a bullet train from Tampa to Disney and the Orlando airport. Florida got the big prize as it will be in play for the next presidential election, while Minnesota and Illinois are typical Knee Jerk Democratic liberal votes, already considered to be in Obama's bag! Ah well, real quality is in the government planning and all those that will be able to feed at the government trough. There are no pick axe jobs coming for at least another 10 years, if ever.! More tax payer money being wasted. If Obama is really serious about the economy (as he says) he will abandon this boondoggle choo choo train experiment. Sadly, we know his ego won't allow that fiscal responsibility and we will plummet further into debt. There is NO NEED for this train. Wake up people! We can't be spending like this!

Minnesota was thrown table scraps and the local politicians rejoice as if it was a feast. They now will spend money they don't have to research 4 "potential routes" for a train which will never be built (in our lifetime). And the biggest waste of money is Ramsey County hiring Mortenson to work on the Depot - which has no trains going to it, including the Central Corridor- with no identified funding source, other then the federal money THEY DIDNT GET! The Ramsey County Commissioner states we will proceed! How sad. The rush to show that St. Paul matters has given us the Central Corridor which no one will ride and spending money, we don't have, on a depot with nothing planned to stop there. It seems the strategy is build it and they will HAVE to come there. Shame on you all. November can't come soon enough. Tic Toc

Great - make it even easier for all the deadbeats from Chicago to come here to collect their welfare benefits. Why don't they take that money to fix the welfare system or better yet - use that money for mandatory birth control!!!!

Chicago is a toilet. Why do we need yet another mode of transportation from the twin cities to Chicago? We already have bus service, hop a plane for $69 for a 1 hour trip, drive a car. This is America and we like driving our cars. The money would be much better spent on projects to improve our electric transmission, internet transmission, upgrade our ancient water and sewage lines, drill for our own oil, build up our nuclear electric plants, etc.
Obama has wasted trillions of dollars and has nothing to show for it except saving government workers from feeling the pain of this economy like the rest of us have. His proposed jobs bill is just more money (and our debt)to provide another influx into government workers. His exemption of unions from the 40% cadilac health insurance tax is a gift to government workers too as only 12% of private sector workers are unionized. This clown Obama cares nothing about us or America, all he cares about is supporting government and government workers. Liberal progressive government workers are the most greedy and selfish bunch of people I have ever seen. They and their unions MUST be brought down. They have been stealing from us for decades.

Old Timer;
Please read the whole news story. The $600,000 is for a grade and route feasibility study as to where the high speed rail[HSR] will traverse. There are three basic options available. If the best route chosen can be upgraded and/or modernized then the HSR could conceivably make the MSP to CHI run in 4-5 hours!

At the present time, to go to Chicago via air takes just about the same time when you consider or factor the following:[on a good day]
1) Drive time to the airport.[30-45 minutes average]
2) Parking at MSP or Arrival at [ORD/MDW] terminals.[15-30 minutes]
3] Check-in & Security.[30-90 minutes]
4] Flight time {no delays} from take-off to landing.[75-120 minutes]
5] Arrival, baggage{if any}, terminal departure [30-45 minutes]
6] Depart Airport(s) and arrive destination.[45-90 minutes]
Total time from start to finish of your air journey to Chicago is best 4-1/2 hours to at worst{on a good day} 7 hours!

With HSR, start to finish, home-train-destination, your journey could take 5-6 hours average on a good day with a high speed route[limited hsr stops]. From downtown to downtown in a no-stress relaxed environment, eating facilities and amenities, and comfort. In most cases, your luggage travels in the same rail car as you do and porter service can help you to the terminal if need be.

Why fly the crowded skies when you can ride in comfort on a train?

Unless these high speed trains have their own dedicated tracks, their speed will be dictated by what are freight use tracks, just like Amtrak is now.
High speed rail should be reserved only for major population area destinations. The Twin Cities is not a major population area. You can fly to Midway in 45 minutes. Why would anyone use high speed rail between her and Chicago? Prove to me and others that it will get you into the Chicago station within an hour of departing the Twin Cities and then maybe we can talk. And for $50 each way or less. Southwest will fly me to Chicago on a Saturday for $45 and return for $75.
It's a giant waste of money for this area.
