"It's unfortunate that it takes the death of an 11-year-old boy to
highlight the dangers of drunk driving", State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske
said. What is "unfortunate" is it takes someone dying before the
system will deal with chronic alcholics. She has been in and out of
detox since she was 18 and, according to the article, has been put
in detox or mental health wards until she dried up then put right
back onto the street. In this case she has been crying out for help
with this and simply never got it; now she will probably be jailed
for vehicular homicide. Nice, huh?

I work in the mental health field and have been around enough
of these cases to know that the system as it exists is worthless.
People have to want to change before they ever will, but this girl
appeared to want to and no one would keep her long enough to
give her a chance. She was a killing waiting to happen and it
came here, but it didn't have to be this way if the system would
have done its job. I say these things every working day of my
life and..........well, you can guess where it gets me.

Yep, the system is broken. Who broke it? The system is a pyramid, starting with the family. It then goes on to school, friends, neighbors, extended family covered with self-respect, and respect for authority. There are more of these young people out there waiting to do the same thing when they get a car and use. Who took the family structure out of the equation, or pyramid? Well, lets go back to when it became viable for a single person to say, "I dont need help, I can raise a kid on my own." 1960s.
Welfare, womens lib, lawyers advertising on TV, birth control, loose morals. Ah, what do I know? I am just an old gray hair. You dont have to listen to anybody but yourself. Do what you want, dont worry about anybody else but you. The government will fix this just like they fixed that other stuff.

Change must ocurr first by repealing the US Constitution. In the US Constitution, the people ARE the AUTHORITY who create government for their servant. In order for a vilage to raise a child and so government may intervene in saving children from their parents, the US Constitution must be repealed. By doing so, the right to bear arms may be done away with so that gun crime can be abolished and the right to drive must be done away with so that drivers can be saved from themselves.

Ahhh, yes.'.the system' diidn't do it's job. With all due respect to your work in the mental health field, I would be interested in how you think "the system" failed in this situation. Another way to look at this is that the woman who caused this horrible incident didn't do her job. Her job, as I see it, was to exercise a certain level of basic accountability and personal responsibility. It appears to me that there were numerous opportunities in "the system" for her to turn her life around and avoid this horrible outcome. Would you suggest that the government step in and lock up every individual who struggles with any kind of substance abuse and/or alcoholism? You alluded to the fact that people have to want to change before they ever will, but you missed the point. It seems to me that she had chances, but she made personal choices to ignore her opportunities to utilize the help which she was undoubtedly aware of. My sincere sympathy to the bereaved family who were so tragically impacted by one person' flagrant and callous disregard for others. It's about personal choice. Not "the system." And to infer anything other than that is to place blame for it doe not belong.

The only thing that is protecting you and your idiotic statements is the Constitution. If you posted that garbage in most of the countries in the world you would be put in PRISON!

No offense Lt. but for the overwhelming majority of us it DOES NOT take the death of an 11 year old to high-light the dangers of drunk driving.

My condolences to the family and may this little boy rest in peace. This gal was calling or screaming out for help. It isn't the "system's" fault for failing her, it is probably herself, and her family. The "system" isn't smart enough to handle people with mental illnesses. The "system" has a profit margin that it adheres to and is woefully inadequate.

There will be no time spent in jail...knowing this girl (she lived in the same apartment complex as me a few doors down) she received section 8 housing and food stamps. She was constantly drunk/high. She had a job that she worked the bare minimum to keep getting aid and her boyfriend was a drug dealer. Tried telling the apartment manager but she didnt care she gets the rent check from the government so they love it. She is a hispanic female and in Minnesota that means no jail for anything....they are gonna jump right to that mental health crap she will spend some months in the mental hospital and then some probation but still back at home within the year

Why must morons like you take shots at single parents? I might have read your post without thinking you were clueless except for that reference. I raised a son by myself.
I never received any help - including child support. I have never complained about it. I continue to work and contribute to society and so does my son now that he is an adult. Neither of us has ever had alcohol, drug or mental health issues. That makes us like most people. Let's examine with relilable statistics this airheaded assertion that children of single parents are problems. Shall we? Or would that be too much trouble for people with loaded agendas? Good thing we have folks like you to judge the rest of us.

First my condolences to the Balistreri family. And then to you 'are you kidding' from Anoka. What part of the story did you not read? It states they took her back to detox AGAIN but she was denied because of her uncooperative behavior and marijuana use. This is not the systems fault. This is only Greaber's fault. We all have choices to make and she unforunately made an extremely poor one. I too made a choice this morning going to work. I chose not to get drunk and high and get behind the wheel.
Let's start putting the blame where the blame belongs and that is the person who commits the wrongful act. Let's also start metting out punishment as it should be. Enough of good behavior and getting an early release. The victim doesn't get a second chance, why should the person committing the crime get a second chance?

Bless the Balistreri family and their loss.

Personal accountability and responsibility PERIOD.

No excuses - choices are made - consequences paid. Sadly the most horrid of consequences is the family burying their baby.

The True story always comes out in the comments. Thanks for this lovely insight. I believe in an eye for an eye. Take one of my children and I will spare yours, but you wouldn't be so lucky. I would make it hurt real bad before it ended. Then I would sleep like a baby.

BOTTOM LINE A CHILD LOST HIS LIFE SNUBBED OUT BY ALCOHOL . PRAY FOR THIS BOYS FAMILY AND THEIR MENTAL STATE AND THEIR HEARTS THIS WILL AFFECT THEM THE REST OF THEIR LIVES .

I AM FROM BURNSVILLE AND GREW UP THERE AND I KNOW THE GIRL WHO KILLED THE BOY .

BURNSVILLE AND SAVAGE HAVE A MAJOR ALCOHOL PROBLEM AND IT HAS BEEN THAT WAY FOR A LONG TIME .

THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO DRINK AND DRIVE PERIOD .

OFTEN PEOPLE WHO KILL SOMEONE IN A DRUNK DRIVING ACCIDENT DONT GET EVEN HALF THE SENTANCE OF SOMEONE WHO STEALS OR SOLD DRUGS .. THIS IS A TRAGEDY IN ITSELF .

THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH THAT FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE .

WE CAN ALL BE SAVED BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS SHE CAN REPENT AND ASK FOR FORGIVENESS ..

THE FAMILY OF THE BOY SEEMS SO STRONG IN THEIR FAITH AND FAMILY IT REALLY CHOKES ME UP .

IM SO PROUD OF THE BOY S FAMILY AND BELIEVE GOD HAS HIS HANDS ON THEM NOW ..

ITS TIME FOR MN TO STAND UP AND START TAKING CONTROL OF THE STATE .

IT ALL STARTS WITH THE FATHER IN HEAVEN THEN THE FATHER AT HOME . THE SPIRITUAL LEADER OF THE FAMILY , THEN ITS ON FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND MOTHERS AND FATHERS AND BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND COMPLETE STRANGERS TO CHECK EACH OTHER AND TO KEEP TABS ON EACH OTHER .

DONT BLAME THE SYSTEM DONT BLAME ANYONE THERE SHOULD BE ONLY PRAYERS AND THANKS TO GOD THAT WE LIVE ANOTHER DAY HERE ON EARTH .

THE BOY JOEL IS WITH THE LORD NOW HE WAS A BLESSING IN LIFE TO THE FAMILY AND IN HIS PASSING TO BE WITH HIS SAVIOR AND HIS FATHER IN HEAVEN WILL COME NEW FOUND EMOTION AND PASSION FOR TIGHTENING UP THE PROBLEMS IN OUR STATE AND GET MORE PEOPLE TO WAKE UP .

ITS HORRIBLE WHEN A TRAGEDY HAPPENS LIKE THIS MY PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS ARE WITH EVERYONE INVOLVED .

I WISH THIS WOULDNT HAVE HAPPENED BUT I THINK WE NEED TO ALL STEP IT UP A LITTLE IN OUR OWN WAYS AND START CHECKING FRIENDS FAMILIES NEIGHBORS AND STRANGERS ON THEIR DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE AND START SPREADING THE GOSPEL AND A BETTER LIFE

HOLD ON BE STRONG AND PEOPLE LETS ALL TAKE A MINUTE TO THANK GOD FOR EVERYTHING HE DOES FOR US AND PRAY FOR THE FAMILIES INVOLVED AND THAT THEIR SONS LIFE WAS NOT LOST WITHOUT BEING A POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON dwi LAWS AND OF OUR COMMUNITY THIS IS A WAKE UP MN

THANKS GOD BLESS AND JOEL IS IN A PLACE WITH GOD

DONT DRINK AND DRIVE OR YOU ARE THE PROBLEM !!

IM NOT JUDGING ANYONE I USED TO HAVE A DRINKING PROBLEM AND HAVE GOTTEN A DWI AS WELL I ATTENDED A MEETING WITH A MAN FROM MINNESOTANS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING . YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS DOES TO PEOPLE AND THEIR FAMILIES I WAS VERY MOVED BY THE STORY AND REALIZED THAT I HAD A PROBLEM .. I SOUGHT THE LORD TO FREE ME FROM MY ADDICTION TO DRINKING

HE FREED ME AND I HAD A PROBLEM WE CAN ALL BE FREED !!!

WE ALL NEED TO TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY IN OUR OWN WAYS AND NEED TO START TAKING THE PROBLEMS BY THE SCRUFF OF THE NECK AND START MAKING CHANGES IN OUR LIFE AND HELP IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS

BAD DECISIONS AND BAD CHOICES LEAD TO THE LOSS OF A YOUNG MANS LIFE AT THE TENDER AGE OF 11 ...

THINK ABOUT THAT NEXT TIME YA CRACK OPEN A COLD ONE .. REMEMBER THE DEVIL LOOKS COOL AND IS APPEALING THAT SHOW HE TRICKS YOU TO DO HIS WORK . SEE THE LIGHT PUT YOUR FOOT ON THE HEAD OF THE DEVIL AND REFUSE TO ALLOW HIM TO ROB , KILL AND DESTROY YOU .

lIVE AND WORK AND TRY GOD BLESS MN AND AMERICA
