I can remember one year I didnt come out for football. It might have been my Freshman year. I remember this because this is what turned me around. I was sitting in the living room of my house on old main street. It was friday night and I was watching TV. All of a sudden I heard people screaming and cheering. I got up ran outside and someone had scored and I could hear the fans at my house. That is when I realized what that town was. For you younger guys coming up that may not know what it was like for us then watch Friday Night Lights. That was CLOUDLAND FOOTBALL, and ya know what if we didnt win we didnt lose fans we gained them because they wanted to watch what we were gonna do to the team we played next. Now I was not around to see any of the other teams since about 98 so I only know what we did. As far as quiting if we would have tried that shit someone on the team was kicking us in the ass and mean that literally. But I know what you are saying about heart if you dont have it you dont have it, but why play if you dont want to win. I mean hell do you wanna lose? I know we didnt. When we lost we tried to come out the next week and literally take people out. All I can say is this about football at Cloudland. Your time goes fast. If you play you need to play evey down. Trust because if your heart is in it you will remember evey play of the game, and you will know what you did wrong or right. I am not downing anyone that has or is currently playing football for Cloudland. Just letting you know what someone that loves the game stands. Just hope one of the leaders reads something here that might jump start some ass kicking. Keep up the tradition boys. I will end with this. When I played there was a guy (Combs) that wrote this in the paper after one of our games:
"Those boys in Roan Mtn came to play. I dont know what they were doing but they must be hitting trees in practice." MAKE IT HAPPEN BOYS! GOOD LUCK!

and how would you know ? hu do you do pills? how do you know what goes on ...Thats a good guy and he works hard and had done more for that foot ball team than anyone...New field , new uniforms, new weight room , locker room , work his ass off to make them a good team....YOU know i hate to say it but no one could do better with what he has..I know there are parents that might now agree but all he has to work with are skinny skater kids ...no size lunford always had big strong guys to play ....The coach now has never had any size anywhere ...I played and we had 10 kids over 275 pounds 4 over 300 pounds ..name one kid that has played that even comes closs ...O you cant ...i know more about football than anyone you know and prob more than most coach in the state does and until he has something to work with ...leave it be .

and dont know who birch 84 is but dude ...you might have made it to the champ game ...but the best team that ever went threw cloudland was 97's team ..By far ...they would have killed that champ runner up team...O line and d line was awesome ...I played in 99 and we only lost 2 game all year ...I have watched all Lander games for 20 years...that was the best team...

Most people say that Mark or Tim was the best player..Its hard to say other wise ..But my money is on Big Keith ...he was a beast and made so many big plays ..If he had 2 good legs we all would be watching him on Sundays...Thats just the truth and how it is .. Donnie sosh You man was the best kicker we ever had by far ..would love to see us get another guy to kick and punt like that...Field postion is so important ..people dont understand..As for me i was a big F_ckn lineman slow and mean ..was not the best blocker on my team by far ..But one on one i could dominate ..

4 sure i saw Tim Clipse ..he is my cousin ..and i saw him play ever game ..he was awesome....He had more size and was all state on both sides of the ball...Mark B. had more moves and more speed...But big Keith made so many plays ..Sacks , block punts , he could get off the ball faster than anyone ..He was really good....Jame TOlly had the best chance of really makeing it at football. He had the size and power you need to go to the next level ..He just didnt have the mean steak...I know one thing i love some CLoudland Football

brian russell was a pretty dang good kicker himself. Clipse was great. Byrd was great. I think the biggest problem with the team today is not enough players on the team, hard to win much with only 20 players from 9-12 grades. The coaches and players really need to encourage more of the students to come out and be a part of the team. There should be a lot of pride in being a highlander like it was in the past and still can be.

"The coaches and players really need to encourage more of the students to come out and be a part of the team" to many pussies and skaters are there now.if only the coaches would allow texting on the field they would have more players or if the coaches would go to the skate park and tell them they could wear skates instead of cleates we would have a large turnout until it came time to hit....

The players they had last year were pretty good players just not enough of them. its hard to replace an injured player when you dont have many players to choose from as replacements.

I was around back then and you or Donnie or any other 8th grader did not start on the varsity. Offensive line was Mike Webb, Doug Markland, Dean Fields, Kerns, and Dean Fields. Tight end was Jamie Townson. Johnny Singleton and Jonathan Beam played wide out. Tim Clipse and Matt Birchfield were in the back field. If you're gonna get on here and brag about how tough you are then at least tell the truth.

Comparing Mark Byrd and Tim Clipse is like comparing apples to oranges, two completely different running and playing styles! Both were the best at their running style out of anyone who has been through chs and I don't see how anyone could argue that. 97 vs. 01 for the best team, that could be argued for centuries and never be resolved, both were great.

i would vote 4 the 01 team but since i played on that team i may be a little partial lol but i just think we had more depth and that would of given us the edge but it was the teams before us that taught us to win cause no matter who we were playing we knew we was going to win that what we came to do and as far as the coaching goes i think we need better youth club coaches it hard to take raw kids and turn them into players but ones that know all the basics you just fine turn put them in the weight room and keep em motivated i still say robbby has one of the best coaching minds we could ask 4

I didn't mean to come off smart but some of the things I've been readin on here are just bull. The only players from your alls class that put any time in the weight room was David Stewart and B.J. Arnett. Really nobody put the effort in the offseason they should have. As for the best all around football player to ever play here; his name is Brian Russell. He had the best hands, he had the best feet, and he could play any position on the field. He done more for Cloudland football in the early nineties than anyone I can remember. And he got NOTHING for it. YOu tell me whats wrong with this picture? They didn't even retire his jersey. They retired Benfields jersey and he wasn't even half the player Russell was. I've never liked how they do things around here.

thats very well said donnie, but some of these players play with no heart or respect their teammates, coaches, etc.quitin one week starting the next,it seems the good ole days are gone,we need to get back to them days!!! when no one wanted to play us, sosh be glad your over there, the last couple of years have been decent but no disclipline and quittin when they were down, not like it was when we played. we didnt even show up for hampton this year, ive never seen a highlander team do that against hampton in my time on this planet!! but like you said it starts with the upperclassman . not downing anyone personally, but this is a football town you upperclassman should respect what the teams before you have done and aim to take it to the next level, like win the conference, then playoff games, then the gold ball!!! it starts with you seniors to be. oh yea beat the hell out of unaka!!! just venting off some steam.
Its hard to believe this year will mark the 20th anniversary of the first 10-0 season in Cloudland history. Your right, times have changed and not for the better.
