"We keep hoping our little guy will come through the door -- and it will never be," Herzberg said.:
While I don't wish to minimize their loss and grief, their "little guy" WAS involved in a drug deal.

Why can't it be a mandatory life sentence? If it's "25 to life" he'll still have an opportunity to get out. The herzbergs have to endure a lifetime without their son so why should this murderer get a chance at life outside at all?

their son wasnt involved in a drug deal..the passenger of his truck was a known ex drug dealer and they assumed he had money on him after they seen him taking money out of his pocket at the 7'11..the driver who u claim was in a drug deal never touched drugs in his life..he was a sports freak and was leading a straight life and both of them had nothing on them..so like i said know the facts first..i dont know either of them but i do know how to read articles

I've come to learn that most white kids smoke weed. I'm not being funny. I'm very serious. But that doesn't make it any better that he was gunned down you piece of $hit.

More reason why kids need to stop re-enacting what they see in rap videos. This is real life and you 4 white white kids from Eastern Long Island are not in G-Unit. Cut the nonsense and grow up. Have fun behind the "G wall".

Screw the apologies Brian Rivera. You're only sorry you got caught. Too bad the death penalty doesn't exist. I hope you rot behind bars for the rest of your life & then burn in hell for what you did to Thomas Herzberg. To the Herzberg family, although this sentence won't bring Tommy back, the parole board will do everything in their power to keep Brian Rivera from ever breathing free air again. The next time he'll be released is when he's carried to the morgue in a body bag. Maybe someone will kill him in prison. In the meantime, God Bless you Herzbergs..
Although it is a terrible thing this young man is dead I think you are going a bit off the deep end. You are acting like he was shot sitting in church?? He was in the middle of a DRUG DEAL!! You know my dad always told me "If you want to play You gotta Pay" and unfortunately he paid with his life. Things like this happen and everyone always says what a good god fearing person they were. I am sure in some ways he was a "Good Kid". But the facts remain it was a Drug Deal gone bad and the story ended up with a death. In reality it could have gone many different ways. Things go bad real fast in these situations and i am sure this kid didn't wake up that morning thinking I am going to kill someone today. They (people in general) just don't get it-one way or another DRUGS KILL!!

Excuse me....get your head of the sand. Their son wasn't involved in drugs he just had a drug dealer in his car! Tom Shuster, try looking at the big picture....EVERY MOTHER LOST IN THIS....granted a life was lost(my heartfelt prayers to the family)however, another mother has lost her son to the prison system forever.....no matter how you cut it...ALL THE BOYS WERE INVOLVED IN DRUGS.....

I think you need to read the article as quoted:

I agree the sentences should fit the crimes especially in drug related crimes. But I can not take you and others putting Herzberg up on a pedestal he was in the middle of a DRUG DEAL!!!believe me I feel for his parents they were probably clueless about what thier son was up to as most parents are. It's a bad world out there and if you want to stay alive don't get involved with this CR*P!!!!
