Full story: Newsday

Gone are the goats, geese and pigs that once stocked a farm run exclusively for students at Shoreham-Wading River's middle school.

Where are the janitors who are supposed to be cleaning the schools? Obviously not doing their jobs. They don't do windows. It appears that the school board is in bed with the overpaid teachers & sup'ts. unions. Stop their slush funds and maybe we can save some money. Who do they think they are Obama wasting taxpayers dollars? Let's get some intelligent, independent people to run for school board.

and their taxes are coming in line with the rest of the island - about time I was able to stop subsidizing SWR - oh, it would have been to hard to remove the nuke plant all at once - well, they are still crying like babies, even though they took advantage of us all these years.
The power plant was built in the 70's. The people who got the tax break are long gone. Too bad all the bitter words your spew are wrong.

SWR lived off LILCO for years - meaning all of LI paid for their private country club. I don't feel sorry for them. They wasted that money on foolishness and now that the gravy train has run dry - OH, well..

welcome to reality. Now pay your own way like the rest of us.

Teachers and administrators are paid too much. They get a full year's salary for a parttime job. They work 180 days a year. Years ago my HS teachers worked in the summer to make ends meet.... lifeguards, camp counselors, etc. SAT and regent scores were higher and they taught with more children in the class. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE????

When Center Moriches got hit with a 38.4% increase back in 2005 it was a nightmare . Many people sold their homes because they couldn't afford the taxes. I lost my discretionatory income. I can't take that vacation and have to obtain student loans for my children now. I have an average home assessed at $410,000 and my taxes went from under $6,000 a year to over $10,000 even though I have grieved my taxes ! I still have a big mortgage.payment also.
I hope they are successful in petitioning because these Board of Educations are out of control with their spending.

Again, you are talking about what happened in the 70's. Wake up, it is 2009. The people who ran off with the money are long gone. Also, those people were not aloud to bank any of the money they received from lilco. The money had to be spent or it was lost. That is the reason for the farm and farm animals, violin lessons, million dollar bells, chartered trips for students, teachers, and parents. Now try and count on your fingers how long ago 1970 was and stop with your bitter words of hate for people.

Real Estate prices in SWR district are in for a real drop.As per the state phase aggrement plan with LIPA on nuke plan closure there taxes will average at least 20% a year increase for the next few years.
Anyone want to buy a nice 5 bedroom 4 bath home cheap.Great school district taxes $25,000 dollars a year, great tax deduction. All this can be had with 10% down for only $10,000 a month not including homeowners insurance.

What are you talking about? No one ran off with any money. It was spent lavishly. The residents of SWR were subsidized by all LI Lilco customers. This subsidy went on for years and years. Thus the big increase that SWR taxpayers are seeing. One of the residents quoted in the article said his taxes were going up to $9,000.00. My taxes on the South Shore have been more than that for years. I have good friends that live in Wading River in a 5 bedroom, 3 bath house with a built in pool. There taxes will be about $8,200.00 with the latest increase. The subsidy has kept taxes there artificially low for years with the rest of the ratepayers picking up their tab. I think it's only fair that the taxpayers of SWR pay their own way now.

If the money they took had to be spent on such foolishness, they should have taken less. Not more to spend on stupidity. I don't care if it happened in the '70s. It is part of the SWR history. 2009 - guess what - they have high taxes like the rest of LI. Close down the school and consolidate with Riverhead or pay the increase and stop looking for another bailout.

Yes. And, on top of it, SWR got these impact payments from the state (i.e. all the taxpayers) when Shoreham came off the tax rolls. I believe it was a five year period that the state subsidized some of the lost property tax revenues from the old LILCO. I don't remember the precise details.

But you are right -- for many years all the ratepayers subsidized the SWR district. I remember their outstanding tennis courts, with the same expensive surface as the US Open. They had a working farm. Some carpeting in the buildings. I think they even had a senior trip to France, for French students, but that may have been hearsay. Too long ago....
