I really don't care what Oprah thinks or does. OK, I did watch reruns of some of the Lance Armstrong interview, but that's it. Still, I respect anybody that makes as much money as she does.

Earning a substantial amount of money is not a guarantee for respect. I know people with money who are some of the most self-centered, ill-mannered, greedy jackasses around. Respect is earned...period. Oprah buying cars for her audience, yet avoiding paying the taxes for them so she herself can get a tax break is not someone I respect. She's just another self centered celebrity who uses the system to her advantage.

Oprah can give me a free car anytime she wants. I won't complain. Nobody was forced to take a car.

Actually, many people were surprised when they were hit with a tax bill. They thought the car was theirs free and clear.

If you don't mind paying the $7000 tax payment, by all means, go for it. But the point is, if Oprah was truly a generous person, she would pay for the car along with taxes for her audience. She didn't because it's a tax write off for her. Always an ulterior motive.

She has billions. Paying the taxes is chump change for her.

At the show you are referencing, Oprah did not receive ANY tax write off for the cars given away. GM paid for the cars. GM took the write off. Why did GM not pay the taxes? They got the publicity. This is the norm in show give-aways. The receiver is responsible for the taxes, have been for 50 years.

However, Oprah did the car give away again in 2010 and she did pay the taxes to avoid any controversy.

You're correct. I was wr....wro.....mistaken. ;)

After checking, I read several incidents where Oprah paid for the taxes in several countries such as the UK and Australia.

I still won't label her a saint by far, but she gains a bit of respect, at least from me.

Plus, I noted in two places where Oprah went back and reimbursed the original people for the tax that GM did not pay including sales tax and registration fees. This is the Internet. I have to see it every place before I can believe it though. I guess the public does not realize this tax aspect when Bob Barker or Steve Harvey give cars away. I have thought about it and am eager for the net gain whether I have to liquidate the winnings or not.
