Starting in 2008, a number of bad policies were put into place at ebay that have disproportionately adverse impact upon small sellers. That was by deliberate design, and CEO Donahoe has said as much in a speech in which he called mom & pops "noise". The gradual elimination of "the little guy" is part of the overall corporate goal as ebay transforms into a virtual overstock warehouse venue similar to Amazon. One of the ways in which this is being accomplished is through the flawed DSR (Detailed Seller Ratings) system. Even a few low DSR ratings from a buyer (even if left by mistake or if unwarranted) cause a number of punitive measures to automatically begin against a small seller: 1) 21-day ebay holds on a seller's PayPal funds 2) Seller Limitations (a limit on the number of items a seller can list on ebay) 3) Lower placement of items in ebay search. All of these punitive measures factor together to drive many sellers off ebay (and it has been working all too well).

Of course ebay corporate isn't trying to fix any of these problems that they themselves created by design to "weed out" the small sellers.

Systematically eliminating mom and pop sellers is definitely part of the overall scheme. Thousands of small sellers are waking up to it and leaving ebay of their own accord. High volume sellers are taking over the place, along with Chinese sellers flooding the site with cheap, mass produced items at rock bottom prices.

Ebay sellers filed an antitrust lawsuit over feedback policy sometime last year (you can Google it). It's slowly inching toward court.

Just last week, ebay blocked 15,000 sellers from listing in their latest "purge". Suzanne Wells broke the news on www.examiner.com and Ina Steiner has a great article about this, Ebay Confirms Crackdown, at EcommerceBytes.com

Here's a great comment from an ebay discussion board thread: "Most unsettling is the hypocrisy at ebay. eBay kicks off 15k sellers for a 4.6 and possibly still 100% Pos FB.. Yet allows the Toys R Us's of the world to continue for no other reason than....THE MONEY...If the money is significant, eBay adjudicates the seller. If the money is not significant they play the moral card. Transparent corruption."

Another purge last week suspended an undetermined mass of small sellers off of ebay.

I buy everything off ebay.. I spend hours searching for the best deals on used Jeans, sweaters, purses and vintage and new books, etc. I even buy baby clothes.
I love ebay. I can not believe they are doing this to mom and pop sellers. How sad.
I was just thinking tomorrow I'm off for holiday so I would shop my ebay.
Wow. I do check feedback and most people I buyfrom are small time. I don't buy from china etc. I buy usa only. I do buy from the smaller people
Sorry to hear this.

A poster on a discussion board had this to say: "Ebay doesn't deliver like it used to. Hostile to sellers atmosphere....worthless CS by design.

Continuous turmoil, invisible rules....etc. "Let them eat cake" management....

They use my listings for advertising other products, I use them for advertising my products.

Smart buyers today can easily use bing or google to find the lowest prices on new makes the Ebay platform an endangered species.

Ebay the place for Chinese wigs and trinkets...that you return."

Ebay is rife with problems for small sellers and continues to purge them en masse, although thousands are leaving of their own accord.

A bullet list of some of what is wrong at ebay: ILLEGAL for a corporation to allow a glitch or malfunction (the automatic five-star on shipping DSR for instance) that adversely impacts a user (many of those "purged" were only out of compliance by 1 star) to continue for an extended period of time without fixing it (ebay did and has admitted this, see Ebay Drags Heels In Fixing Automatic Five-Star DSRs article by Ina Steiner). This is a BREACH of the user agrrement that ebay has with the users affected by this. PAYPAL HOLDS; many (if not most) states do not allow a hold on funds of more than 10 days. Ebay has often slapped 21-day holds on sellers' PayPal funds. A Florida man contacted the banking regulators in his state, they contacted Paypal and got his funds released. Although PayPal is not a bank, it is a money transfer entity and as such falls under the banking regulators of each state. UNLEVEL PLAYING FIELD: As has been pointed out by many people in many threads, DSRs disproportionately impact and are used against small sellers while big box retailers such as TRUS remain essentially untouched. That's also ILLEGAL. Ebay granted itself permission to hide sellers' listings from site visibility in the October 26, 2013 User Agreement update. This is a violation of the seller's REASONABLE EXPECTATION because people place items on ebay with the belief that they will be made visible or be seen in order to sell them, it is aso a form of TORTIOUS INTERFERENCE. A good sharp legal mind needs to look at what's going on at ebay (including the user agreement). Attorney general's offices in each state are very good at that sort of thing. I am not an attorney, but like many on here I am sharp enough to know when there are some things amiss.

The best way to get even with Ebay as a mom and pop seller is to start another Ebay just for mom and pop sellers.

eBay hike fee cap for private sellers by 333%

“eBay have announced an increase to the maximum fee chargeable for private sellers. The maximum fee charged per item will rise from £75 to £250.

“As a private seller without a Basic Shop, this means that if you sell an item for under £2,500 your final value fee will be 10% of the total transaction price (including postage). If your item sells for over £2,500 you will be charged a maximum final value fee of £250. Previously you’d hit the maximum fee of £75 with a sale price of £750.

“As a private seller with a Basic Shop, this means if you sell an item for under £3,125 your final value fee will be 8% of that total transaction price (including postage). If your item sells for over £3125 you will be charged a maximum final value fee of £250. Previously if private sellers with a basic shop would hit the maximum fee of £75 with a sale price of £937.50.”

The earlier doing away with the tiered price structure to “simplify” matters—ie, increase eBay’s take—is not bringing in enough additional revenue to keep the eBay marketplace afloat, apparently …

Johnny Ho must be getting really desperate for revenue; the US will be next, I suppose …

eBay Inc, where the incompetent mingle with the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

Always sort from lowest price to highest including free shipping. This is much faster than sorting by relevance. Let me decide what is relevant.
