Operation Compliance: Detroit Shuts Down 'Illegal Businesses'
The city of Detroit is putting padlocks on what they consider "illegal businesses" running without licenses or permits that are often considered as potential breeding grounds for blight and crime in the city.

If you are trying to build or repair something, the city makes it difficult to get permits and inspections. Many contractors never bother with permits and the city never catches anybody. Now they figure businesses have the money so they will hold them ransom.
PS. The news had a lead story of a tire business that had a frayed wire!

It's all about the instant money now in Detroit. Inspectors are driving around just writing people up for anything. If the paint is peeling or if a shed doesn't have a permit or is too close to the property line, that's a citation.
