Drawbridge Over Rouge River In Detroit Damaged By Freighter
The drawbridge over the Rouge River in Detroit will remain closed indefinitely after a freighter hit the bridge early Sunday morning.

Picture how this could happen. That huge mass of a boat moving at 7 knots of more hits the bridge as it is lowered on the deck. The twisting force on the bridge would be enormous. Police took the bridge tender into custody so I suspect negligence in the form of intoxication.
Bridges are old technology that could easily be enhanced by modern sensors to prevent lowering when a boat is near or raising when vehicles are on the bridge and not boats near.
