My favorite story of rouge days is back in the 60s when they use to put the carp in the pool we would meet at the park to see them dump them and pick your fish you were going to catch with your nothing but your hands!.Well 1966 Rouge days. I my friends went in a came out with the biggest fish I had ever seen! Took 2 of us to carry it home! But what was we going too do with this giant? I know put it in the bath tub! Thats when the trouble started my father came home from a hard days work at Dana and started to take a bath until he seen this stinky fish in the tub lets just say david darryl and I could not get that fish out of the house fast enough! And took a ass kicking for putting the giant in the tub!! Now rouge days are just memories!

I really loved Rouge Days. Our biggest issue was DECIDING which great event to attend. My favorites were the Water Ball fights - they'd block off Jefferson, and the RR Fire Dept. and another local Dept (or sometimes other city depts.) would play soccer with this giant canvas ball and firehoses. Everyone would get soaked.

Also, they used to have local bands (and some semi-famous bands) play the last night before the fireworks. I met Chubby Chhecker one year.

The giant water ball fight was done in RR and Ecorse too. And pitted those 2 Fire Depts. against each other. Myy brother was on the Ecorse Dept and i got to participate one year, Had a blast.

i didn't notice anyone posting the dates for those who may not be familiar, but if you can make it, it will be 9/3/10 - 9/5/10. things may not be the same but i personally have a good time wherever i go. that's the mindset you have to have. hope to see you there. i think there's still hope for the city.

It was fun reading all the comments about Rouge Days from the past. I also grew up in Rouge (Rouge High Class of 76!) and have very fond memories of the Rouge Days back when I was a kid. The dances were always my favorite! I'll be taking my grandson to the parade this year on Saturday 9/4/10 at noon! I always try and go in hopes that I'll run into someone I know from the past.

just found this website kind of neat to see a lot of people spread all of the US remembering Rouge Days. I agree it really isn't the same. Now it only lasts 3 days and isn't nothing like it used to be... I soo looked forward to rouge days especially with the teen dances/adult dances. Sharkey I read that your cousins use to live in rouge. Larry & David Hall.. wow now that's a blast from the past. David was my cousin Jimmys best friend. how are they? I was just asking my cousin about him.

What good reading in this thread, I spent many a summers waiting for the week long event. I really enjoyed the water ball fight but my most outstanding memory is the circus act in Great Lakes Field, the tight rope act memory always stays at the top of my mind. I probably think of that 3 or 4 times a year. It was about 1971-72 I guess. My Mother works the bingo booth every year. She worked it this year also. I was a class of 77 student.

I run the River Rouge Historical Museum in Rouge. It's the old Gallagher Funeral Home at 10750 W. Jefferson, across from the monument. We have a monthly newsletter. My sister Jenny Cooper reads the old Rouge Heralds and puts the good stories in the newsletter. She is finishing 1050 and will go to 1960 next. The newsletter is FREE by e-mail. Go to "[email protected] " and leave your name and e-mail address. Visit the Museum on Sundays from noon to 4:00 pm.

Tom, my Mother sends me some of her copies of your news letter and I signed up for the news letter on line a while ago, I have not got it. I will go to the web site you provided and sign in again. I have been to the Museum once about 7 years ago or so. I still have the little red pocket knife with light in it. I will have to visit again the next time I am in town, it was a great experiance and I think when I was there it was pretty new.

All I remember about Rouge is that it stunk. Air quality there was rancid. The steel mill polluted everything, the river, the houses, with it's horrible rotten egg smell that surely drifted to Wyandotte every hour of the day. The political scene was corrupt as hell. Ecorse and Rouge were the downtrodden areas of the downriver communities. Sure at one time it was a nice area, probably more in the early part of the century. I'm telling ya'... GREAT LAKES STEEL MILL cancerized that whole area, along with the Marathon Petroleum Co. that was built in 1930 on Fort street adjacent to Schaefer road by the Aurora Gasoline Company; the only refinery in the state of Michigan. Rouge already looks like Del Ray and into that strip along W. Jefferson. Leave me some replies. Love to hear what the new generation that is living there thinks?
