I would have to disagree Rouge, Ecorse and Lincoln Park are in bad condition but they have a long way to go to be like Delray.

With today’s economy and the auto industry not doing well I bet you were still down there. You were pretty young back then we might have never came across each other.

Hi, I grew up in River Rouge too, at least in 4th -7th at Ann Visger and then 8-9 at RRHS. I live in Nottingham, PA, about 8 miles from you in Newark, DE. Coincidence. I love River Rouge Days back then. I loved the money scatter in the pond for us kids, the races and prize money we won, the dime toss for the glasses. Especially the waterball fight between Rouge and Ecorse Fire Depts. I loved it when they sprayed us, not so by accident. LOL that was back in late 70's early 80's

I grew up in Ecorse (60's & 70's) and we have a really cool 'Remember When' forum. You guys should continue this blog. We always would go to Rouge Days - Awesome. It was cool that Ecorse had July 4th & Rouge had Labor Day (if I remember correctly). As a teen I used to hang with George Mihaiu, Buzzy Blair, Tom Biggs and a few others. They were friends with my boyfriend at the time. It got to be that they would come over to visit my parents even when I wasn't home. The Rouge kids were cool. I eventually went to Mt. Carmel in Wyandotte and there was something missing. The kids from Rouge & Ecorse were just fun to be around. Keep your blog going - it was a great time back then!

You are right, Rouge people were for real. I went to school with all three of the guys you mentioned and they were all quality people.

The last time I visited, I saw that River Rouge was NOT the same town I grew up in. As a toddler in the late 60's my grandmother would take me to the soda fountain at Cunningham's or (my favorite) to Renaud's for a fresh squeezed lemonade. As I got a little older, I would go to the lunch counter at Kresge's for a Cheeseburger Deluxe Platter With Fries. In elementary school, I would be happy if my mom had money for me to eat lunch at Zenith.
In high school, my favorite lunch hangout was The Coffee Pot. I fondly remember going to the playground for lunch and playing box hockey. I also remember going to the rec center for swimming and ice skating. Those were some fun times! I am a member of the Ann Visger Class Of '78 and RRHS Class of '83.

How about the great Rouge Days parade, the varity show and fireworks right after. Does anyone remember in the winter when the city would put a bag of salt on your front porch for free. How about Our Lady of Lourdes sunday afternoon football games at Hauer field. Which bring to mind Hauer hardware that was right across from the post office. Can anyone name some old businesses that are gone ?

I remember Cunningham's, Reno's and Renaud's Drugs along with several other businesses. I loved going shopping at Kresge's on Jefferson. Shearer's Bakery made the BEST birthday cakes...it's a shame that they closed :( I would shop for clothes at Red Robin's and shoes at Schiff's (both on West Jefferson). I did laundry at the White Cloud and I LOVED the meat counter at Rouge Public Market. Jeff and Coolidge Market closed and Family Dollar took its place. How sad, because J&C was conveniently located across from my apartment at the Reno Building - I would run across the street to pick up something if it couldn't wait until I went to Farmer Jack or Meijer. There was a Val-U-Mart convenience store where my grandma would go to get her lottery tickets. I also remember the delicious meals Chef Henry would make at the Coffee Pot. As a teenager, I played at the Time Warp and Mike's Arcade. A couple more closed businesses - Dr. Cole's office and Richard Allen's (it was Labadie's Rexall before it was sold). Things have CHANGED :( I WISH someone could scan their old Heralds online and pay for the website rougeherald.com It would be wonderful to recall more memories of my growing up on Goodell Street.
