Tom Walsh: If GM thrived after bankruptcy, why not Detroit?

Well, if the fed moved in and gave Detroit a bunch of billions of dollars, life in the city would indeed be rosy until it ran out. The answer to "why not?" is the fact that GM had the potential to EARN money by PRODUCING a needed product. Detroit has no such potential unless you count living carefree off the dole as a needed product. I admit that living off the dole is seen as a viable lifestyle here in Detroit.
