I got along with the Rant and the majority of the Gents. We were in High School together. This is just the way that bunch was. Herb would never go one on one with anyone. Possibly due to his size I would guess. The others at that time wern't very large either that is why it took so many to win a fight.

I went to skips during its hey day. Anyone remember the big bust (I mean bust as in mass arrests) at skips? Mostly i miss amblins haunted houst. I went there as a small kid,got scared, took my kids, they got scared. ai miss not being able to take my grandson there. Another real same is this is the last year for kiddie land. That should have landmark status.
Yes I remember the arrest. My cousin was a copy at the time and participated in the big bust. North Avenue was blocked off by car enthusiasts to hold drag racing contests. They even had a dragster race!

Wow, I just found this forum. This is so cool. My sister and I were just trying to recall some of those names and places. Our home was on 12th and Superior. We moved out in 1965 when Westlake bought our house. I remember a penny penny candy shop on Lake St. next to Montana Charlies. I have to admit, Stretzels (I'm sure I misspelled it) was my favorite. I remember there was one just east of 5th Ave. on Lake and one by Otto's Meat Market in Maywood (Down the street from White Way). My sisters, brother and me used to get chased away from Westlake all of the time. Their new entrace had a great slope to it and we used to skate board (homemade boards) down it all of the time. We also used to launch our parachute guys over their air vents outside. We lived on the block with the Bellows, Weiss, Goggins, Brust, Schramm. It sure was nice reading about good Ol' Melrose Park!
I knew the Weiss Family. Renada Weiss gave me her bike when I was 10. My sister is still friends with Karen Brust. We lived at 12th and Chicago Avenue.

I lived in Melrose and worked at the National food store down the block from the drug store. I played in a garage band with instruments bought at the pawn shop on 19th (Broadway).
We played music at Veterans Park behind Winston Plaza. Played with Jim Peteric and others from Melrose and Bellwood.
Bought my first dress suit at Eries on the corner of 19th and Lake.
Remember the bowling alleys on 19th later became a slot car track that you paid by the minute.

Its good to hear all these good memories! Now Melrose is a breeding ground for dirty mecxicans and there gangbanging. They destroyed are town with lake street smelling like grease from all the cat meat and possum meat these dirty BEANERS cook in there disgusting resturaunts that took over most of the buisnesses we grew to love! Do yourself a favor don't come back to Melrose it'll just make you depressed and physically sick!!

The one store I haven't seen mentioned is "Community Discount". It was on North Ave and I think 9th?

How about getting your haircut in the basement of the Bosen's (1500 block of 17th) or at the Popes house on 18th and Norwood.

Ever get your fill of grapes waiting for your pizza while sitting in the arbor outside of Teodori's Lounge?

How about a Double Cheeseburger from Stuffy's across from the Igloo pm Lake. Stuffy was one of the nicest counterfeiters (or people) I've ever met!

I grew up in Nortn Maywood, lived there for about 21yrs, then moved to Melrose. Been here 17 yrs. I have seen alot of great businesses gone, but not forgotten.
Do you remember the little grocery store on Chicago Ave? It was located between 6th & 7th. Owned by an older gentleman named Herb. As kids, we used to go there all the time, it is now apartments.
This is great, just thinking about the good ole days, thanks everyone for your input...keeping my mind alive!!:-)
I worked there when I was 12. Many years ago 1975 I think. Herb was a nice man. That job taught me many life lessons I was not aware of at the time.
