Isn't that heteronormative to assume that just because there's no sign he was gay therefore he must have been straight?

It doesn't really matter at this point, does it? A child is dead.

This thing is getting really tiring....... but, it needs to be reported and it is the reality of being here. It does not seem that the jokes and bullying that existed before carried as much water as they do now. The kids are now accusing other kids of being gay or lesbian and now the kids that are being bullied just can not take it. It is bad enough to call any child, any number of things, but to ridicule them on their sexual orientation, of which may or may not be his or her own, is going too far. It does not surprise me that more kids are not committing suicide over this matter. It goes on to show that there needs to be MORE Gay-Straight Alliances in schools, even at the middle school level.

Who cares if the young man was gay , bi, trans or straight. He is dead because the parents of other children used or acted in hatred to people that are different: black , white , gay , straight , thin , fat , ...............{you fill in the blank with your on pain.}

I've been on Queerty and the mother's reaction raises a lot of red flags. She's literally freaking out that people are going to think her son was gay and it's a bit odd she's so consumed with this aspect right after her son died.

Sorry, but the kid doesn't look straight to me and the mother's insane reaction to people thinking he might be gay gives an indication as to why he killed himself IF he was a homosexual.

btw, it's bullshite, IMO, this article is reporting this kid was straight because, as someone has already pointed out, there isn't any evidence to say he wasn't. However, I bet, there's no evidence to say he wasn't gay either.

What you say hear reminds me of the case in new Jersey where the school kids were executed by gang bangers. Remember that case ? They were all shot in the head, and only one survived. Initially the news reports stated that all the friends who were shot were openly gay and lesbian. But the next news report I read about the case said that the D.A. was not going to bring hate crime charges, because the parents did not want the D.A. to "emphasize that aspect of their lives". Soon after that, the gay press stopped covering the case.

Those parents too seemed more concerned that their dad children were gay or lesbian, than the fact that criminals murdered them in cold blood. It's tis attitude that contributes, I think, to hatred and violence against gay and lesbian people, and why it's so important to be out and proud about our lives.

It matter because heteronormativity killed that child.

It's because of heteronormativity and homophobia that he is dead.

To perpetuate heteronormativity by calling him "straight" when we don't know for sure is irresponsible. It should say it was because of homophobic bullying but we do not know if he is gay.
