<quoted text> Dont get me wrong. 50k a year is not breakn the bank.. I know. Im just saying to get summers off and all snow days, holidays etc. Including the hour long lunch, plus planning period. Once its all broken down teachers make a great hourly wage. Pay vs time worked is pretty good! Not another career out their that a person gets every summer off, not even drs, lawyers, politicians...u get the pt. Btw, elementary education is one of the easiest degrees to get.
To be fair & honest, there are teachers, albeit few, that may TAKE 60 minutes for lunch, do less than nothing during their planning periods, and does absolutely nothing outside of 7:45-3:45 each day. IMO, those are the ones that have no regard for the young people or pride in what they do. Like other laborers and professionals, there are a few jerks that do an amazing job at misrepresenting their profession for the rest of the public to observe. The actions of a few tarnish the reputations of the majority.

Yes, your figures are inaccurate. Your lower figures are close, but you cite a $10K range that doesn't exist, i.e., beginning teacher at $30-40K. A 20 year teacher at $50-60K...the $50k is a stretch. If you would like, I'll dig out this year's Jackson County Salary Schedule, and share w/ everyone line and verse. After all, the salary schedules are supposed to be a matter of public record.

Does a teacher w a masters degree not get roughly 10k more than a teacher wo?? That was my 10k difference. Low number was bachelors, high number was masters. I believe there is even a masters plus but u get the pt. Low number was accurate, but im very inaccurate... Huh???

I believe administrators can make 70k +. Which are just teachers who have seniority who make the transition. Who also get summers off! Its obvious ur a teacher.. Not trying to bash you man. You sound like one of the good ones who cares about the kids. Im sure you earn your pay and put time in during the summer. Im just saying a lot of teachers are duds who cares nothing about educating and do as little as possible. Probably the same ones who smoke a joint before work. Those are the teachers im referencing to, not the GOOD ones!! So for all the good teachers, pay no attention to my comments and thanx for your services.

There is a $5-6k difference.
We've both stated our points on salary. What's next?

I will agree w/ some of what you say here. Administrators CAN make $70K + per year, but few have the years of experience to put them at that level. Administrator pay is also based on school size. They are NOT just teachers who have seniority. They do not get summers off. The number of days they work again is based on school size. Most of our teachers are NOT duds. Some, yes. A lot, no.

Really? You have no idea who I am or what I do. Work on understanding the difference between an argument and a discussion. I'll discuss anything and argue about nothing. Feel free to join the discussion or feel free to leave us alone while we discuss.

Just because students have holidays off doesn't mean the teachers get the days off too, they still have to be there all day mostly in meetings. I don't know where it came from that some think teachers make too much money? They barely make enough to get by and be able to do extra things for their students with their own money since the school doesnt ever give them enough and not to mention they got a pay cut. So yeah if you're a teacher you have to love your job because not one of them could say they're doing it for money.

Go to college and get your degree. Take your state exam and pass. Then pass a drug test. Get your fingerprints taken. If you can do all of this maybe you can get a job. By the way, it's ten months a year.

I have taught for 11 years. I have a Master's degree + hours. I make $42,000 a year. I work hours after school, on weekends, and use my summers to get things ready for school in the fall. I don't teach because I am too stupid to do anything else. I started out in another career and realized I wanted to give back to the community. Most teachers are just like me. There are a few that give a bad name to most. This is unfair. Without teachers, no one would be where they are, even the president of the United States. Why is it that people feel they must bash teachers? I am all about being drug tested, if nothing else, to quiet those who have nothing better to do than make waves. I am all about teacher accountability, but it needs to be fair. I want judeged on my merit, not on the child who hates my guts becuase I make him/her listen and do their work, so they make pictures with the bubbles on their test sheets. Yes, they do that, and no, I can't say anything to them. If I am held accountable for that test, then that student needs held accountable too. Parents need held accountable too. If everyone did their part, the education system wouldn't be broken. Everyone is too busy pointing fingers at teachers to realize they aren't the only ones responsible. Give credit where it's due and quit bashing just to hear your own voice!

Not all are bashing... if teachers were paid top dollar, greater minds would be drawn to the occupation. On the other hand the job should def be performance based. To many teachers let life get in the way of the job they are paid to do. When someone starts showing up for a check as opposed to trying to make a better future for the children, their ass should be out the door.

Failing someone over one spelling mistake? I am sure you also have never, ever made one spelling mistake or "mis-typed" anything in your whole life. Give me a break... Topix amuses me. A discussion about teachers smoking turns into a spelling lesson. I agree with Nameless.

As someone who was a substitute teacher in Jackson County Schools, I know that teachers are certainly pressed to make sure students complete a required amount of instructional minutes each day; however, given that everyone (including teachers) want students to have time to "be kids" during the school day, not all of the homework is completed at school. Also, as a former teacher in another county, I would sometimes send homework home with my younger students to make sure there was a connection between home and school (ie, making sure an adult at home checked their backpack each evening.) Homework would be reading a story together or completing a math sheet. Parents also play a very important role in their child's education. I PROMISE if you contact your child's teacher, they would be happy to meet with you, and even work around your schedule.
