Ripley Middle School needs to get rid of there football coach, don't know his name(the fat one) and let coach Melhorn be the head coach. He doesn't even play the best plays on the team, one reason they lose every game. Also he just doesn't know what the he'll he's doing. So glad my child is off to RHS.

Not exactly like he's going off to a good place. Ripley needs some coach cleansing on the high school level before all else

I played middle school and I wish coach melhorn was the head coach, this kid played this year and he played for sissonville midget league last Yr and went to all stars for sissonville but in Ripley he hardly got played. I blame the coaches why they lost.

Does the current coach have the ability, desire, energy and leadership skills to motivate kids? That's what it takes to be successful.

The problem is the parents in this town. First of all there in not really a lot of talent to work with. Everyone thinks their kid or grandkids are the greatest strongest players but lets face it they are not. I have seen the practices and games and the talent that the coaches have to work with is very little. And when I say I have seen the practices and games I am not just talking about the middle school but rather I have watched some of these kids come up though midget as well so I have a good perspective not to mention I do not have any kids playing but I love the game. Coaches do not make winning teams nor do those load mouth former players living their glory days though the kids. No what makes a winning team is heart and guts. Perfect example is the 10-0 team mind you those boys had some light talent but they had heart. I remember when that group of boys first started practice even the then head coach told me they would be lucky to win 3 games but he also said they had heart. That they hated each other as much as they loved each other but at the end of the day they were a team. If this town truly wants winning football it has to have a structure that works with each other from midget to high and stop being petty recruiting kids off middle to play week teams in midget just to give a false face of accomplishment. Any pro team can beat a high school team and that's a fair example of some recent championship seasons. Back in my day a coach could yell in your face not now oh no might hurt someones feelings. No need to change coaches we as a community need to change our attitudes.

The highschool baseball team has been working 6 days a week and you say no kids in ripley have no desire or will to get better?

I completely agree. These parents of midget league parents have their students move up to middle and high school teams and when they are not 10-0 they blame the coaches. Are the coaches perfect? No. Not in the least. However, there is a huge difference in talent that these kids face. The old midget league conference was a joke, they only played schools that feed into high schools that are A, not even AA. Williamstown? Ritchie? Gilmer? Calhoun? Losing a single game to that cake schedule would be an embarrassment. Their league now is a little better, but not much. Poca - AA school. Winfield - A very week AAA. Elk District - AA School. Sissonville - AA, Campbells Creek one of two feeder programs to a AAA school - Dupont - one of two feeder programs into a AAA school. This is not Hurricane, Parkersburg, South Parkersburg, and GW. Winning championships at such a lower level does not mean anything. Hard work and dedication through the middle and high school years are what matters. Yes, we have a few kids in this town that work hard and it shows. A large part of the problem lies with the parents and their lack of support towards the upper levels. I went and watched my nephew play midget league football this year and they were playing weaker teams that had no talent. Go ahead and tell your kids what good they are doing in midget league. Live the pipe dream that you have a division 1 player in your house. Go ahead. With that attitude, your going to end up very disappointed and blaming someone else. Instead, do not start them out so early and burn them out on the sport. Let them mature a little then take them to camps and take them to the extra non required practices. Have them lift to become stronger. Do the hard work and gain rewards.

I am sorry if you mistook what I said. I said they the "football" was light on talent not light on guts or desire. I still believe that we (the parents and adults) have done the kids wrong by playing politics, being petty and foolish. Sports build catheter but if you toss in everything thats going on now into the mix well it just does not work. Again I do not think the kids are at the problem the blame is with the adults only! Stop telling the kids the coaches dont know what they are doing you undermine the entire program. Stop pulling your kids to midget to play third class competition just to give them false glory. They can not grow as players or a team that way. In short stay out of it let the kids play ball on the leave they should. Again i said nothing bad about our kids but am discussed with the so called adults.

If you don't think there is not a coaching program at Ripley High School, you are out of your mind. Ripley High School is currently going through the worst era of sports in its history. All of your 'losing' coaches blame the kids. How do you explain the success of the baseball team and the wrestling team. Same kids... Your football coach is a loser (just look at his career record) your basketball coach is an even bigger loser...(worst winning percentage in the entire state of WV). I understand there are athletes walking the hallways who could really help the teams but who would want to play for these guys? I blame the administration. It is the principal's job to do proper evaluations of the coach's performance and take the necessary actions to improve. Not happening at Ripley High School. I don't know how or why the community stands for it. There used to be a proud tradition at that school. What changed?

I believe I pointed out first that the coaches are not perfect. I was pointing out that comparing youth league results and wins with middle and high school wins is not a fair comparison. Many of the youth coaches are just a bad. Just look at youth sports in Jackson County. Youth basketball is down because of parents being idiots. Little league is a joke anymore. From my understanding the youth wrestling program is very down in numbers. Football is up in numbers, but coaches are not perfect either. Soccer numbers are up, but who wants to play soccer? So the youth programs are pretty equally to blame. Especially when the youth football program has the feeling that they know more than any other person in the county when they are just coaching against joke teams. It is a no-win situation.

Wow, it takes a big man to get on topix and trash a bunch of kids who put everything they had into a season. There were only about 10 boys who had even played football before on the Middle School team this past season, so calling them "talentless" is pretty petty. It's the Coach's job to put the talent in the proper positions. I was at every practice watching my boy, so whoever you are that said you were there watching and want to talk about how terrible they are, I'm sure I'll figure out who you are. Let's not forget these boys are the same boys who had undefeated, and more than one championship season in Midget League. I think maybe you need to get a life if all you can do is talk about a buch of children.

Sports should be a positive, fun experience for the kids and an enjoyable time for the parents. Let's stop the bickering and unite for the overall good of the program. To succeed, we need a good midget league program. It would be best for the overall program if the older kids all came together and played the level of competition offered at the middle school. Those will be their teammates for the next 4 years. Many middle school coaching staffs are assisted by outstanding volunteers from the community. That could happen here, too. United, everyone wins. Divided, Ripley football will not reach its full potential.

Well, I guess that would be nice, but that's just not how it works at this level. That's what Midget League is for.
