I just read an article about how some places are trying to allow some customers to pay with their food stamps. They're trying to pass it to where only the homeless, elderly, and disabled can use their stamps there.

While I think they have some good intentions, of course, their first intention is making more money, how will they be able to tell the disabled? There are a lot of people out there getting assistance for their disablity, but seem fine to everyone else around them. Will there be some kind of guidelines? What do you all think about all this?

Personally, I don't think it will pass, nor do I think it should. I know if my grandmother got food stamps the last place she'd be eating is the list of restaurants that are trying to pass this. She's can't eat that stuff because of her health.

I hope this is not true. My aunt is 65 and disabled and gets 105 a month. She buys another 200 worth from a drug addict for 100.The drug addict is 25 and doesnt work. I know this is illegal but it is necessary in her case. The system is broke.I go to buy groceries and I see people buying 2 carts full of groceries and paying with an ebt card. And they load them into nice vehicles with nice rims and a nice stereo system. Then they drive to the local projects where I and other taxpayers are paying their other bills. You see their kids with 100.00 dollar pairs of shoes.I and my wife work and barely make ends meet. But I would put a bullet in my head if I lost my pride and had to live like that. And people wonder why the Tea Party is getting so strong. People are sick of this and other programs such as the "Obama phone"where people get free cell phones and free minutes. Is this really necessary? The Tea Party is not the answer but it is the lesser of the evils right now. Well, my rant is over. Halftime of the Tennessee game is about over. The system is broken and we are headed for some bad times ahead.Extremists on the Left and Right and no one in between. Just hate and turmoil.

I agree with you 100%,did you know in the school system if you have a retarded child or if you have a gifted child they both can get a check? Also if you have a child with disciplinary problems they can also recieve a check? Our system is broke and all these bleeding hearts and career politicians need to realize this and make some real changes!

Word Police, I know what you mean. I know of a few people who get food stamps and sell them for drugs. And it's sad because I know some that should get stamps because they're older and disabled and can't. I'll try and find the article and link it on here, but it says it's only to be for the homeless, elderly and the disabled, not for everyone receiving food stamps. But,like I said before, I see a lot of people driving around with disabled tags and they seem fine, ya know what I mean? How will they be able to tell whether someone is disabled or not? Anyone can say they have a disability.

Here's the link to the article, for those who would like to read it:

We have a fast food place, and were contacted and asked if we would want to take food stamps, and I said NO before they got started. That too will be abused. Go buy groceries and cook.

Why should they get fast food, they don't work like the rest of us so that leaves them all the time in the day to cook. We all know the answer to that one, they are to damn lazy!!

Make it workfare not welfare, I don't care if they have to cut weeds or pick up trash on the side of the road, make them at least show up for 8 hours a day. And before the child care mess comes up, they decided to have them, let them figure out someone to keep them like I do, get a job!!!

I just learned of the fast food industry accepting ebt. As a fulltime student and server I am eligble for ebt because of my income. I don't undertand why ya'll have a problem with this. The only problem I have with it is that fast food is not a healthy alternative to cooking your own food. but as far as cost consideration goes if someone wanted to live off of a dollar menu their ebt would go father than with grocery prices as high as they are now. which. Just appalled at the posts about to lazy to work. Open your eyes and realize whats really going on in our country.

Numerous studies have been done that prove that fast food is not cheaper than cooking at home...it is just more convienient. You are also right, it isn't healthy. I will go ahead and tell you this: growing up poor taught me that going places like McDonalds were a luxury. It was cheaper to cook things at home and that is what we did. We didn't have the luxury of free money every month to blow on whatever kind of food that we wanted. We grew and canned vegetables. We used deer meat to supplement what meat we could afford. We made do or we went hungry. Maybe some of what I went thru makes it easy to say that most of the younger generation that is on EBT are too lazy to work.

Quizzer, that is the way I grew up also and it made a better person out of me in the long run, only thing we didn't eat deer meat as they were few and far between where I lived when I was a kid. We got our meat when we killed a couple of hogs in the fall. I agree that cooking at home is almost always cheaper. To the student, I don't want to pay for your convenience, some of these ppl are on the welfare system for life, that is the type ppl that most of us don't like helping and they have all the time in the world to cook.

A few months ago, I was in line behind a young woman with her ebt card in hand. She "bought" a pack of gum with the card. Then she changed her mind and also got 5 $100 bills in return. I am standing like a statue with my mouth wide open.
The young woman had salon nails decorated, her hair done to the nines; she had enough jewelry on to bedazzle anyone; her clothes did not come from Walmart and her shoes were fancy. She sashayed out of the store with chrisp Benjamins.

After I got rung up and got out my check book, I asked the person at the register if I could get one of those cards and do like she did. She shrugged her shoulders. I then said that getting that cash leaves no way for anyone to make sure she purchases only "approved" items. The cashier just shrugged her shoulders again and said that is the system.

Well, the system is broke. I like Shaneeka's idea.

I used to work at a grocery store, and people would use food stamps and then go out to a brand new car. Then you got people like me and my husband trying to buy groceries, pay bills. HOUSE payments (because we dont get money from the government) like most people. It is sad that we work so hard, for people to be lazy and not work. All they do is stick there hands out and say give me, give me, give me. Lets all grow up. I know its tough to find a job, but they are everywhere?? What is up with that..GET ONE. The one thing I hate people saying is..well im getting on food stamps, because everyone else is, so why cant I? Come on, food stamps are there when you need them. Not to abuse them. I bet 90% of people dont even need them. I could go on for days about this, I will keep working hard... Yall just keep on living off the working man.

I ain't never been on welfare, that's one place I won't be

I get food stamps and I agree with everyone that says the restaurants should not accept ebt but I don't agree with ppl saying fs are for lazy ppl. This county is so broke I'm surprised everyone is not on them. I hate being on them and I'm kinda ashamed but my kids have to be fed. With that being said,I do work. And as much as I can. I know a lot of ppl that sell their fs for drugs and things that are not needed and as for those ppl the government needs to figure out a way to keep them from getting them. But ppl need to stop saying everyone with an ebt card is lazy BC that's not the case. I agree the majority are but not all. I am also in school and hopefully in about 6months ill be living without the governments help,if not b4. Also agree that if you can't prove a job then by all means this county could use some cleanup. And that would also cut back on ppl working for cash but reporting no work to get more stamps. I could go on but ill stop there. I am one that NEEDS them not ABUSING them and pray that ill be off them soon. I love taking care of myself and family and nothing feels better than paying my bills knowing- I- worked hard to do so.

First, there are regular Food Stamps which can only be used for food/soft drink purchases. The cash part comes into play for those people who get the cash benefit too. So not everyone who has an EBT card can get cash back. Most can't.

Obama has screwed things up so badly many people who normally wouldn't want to use Food Stamps are having to. The unemployment rate is 13.8% in Lauderdale County, 11.9% in Haywood County, Gibson 13.0%, Dyer 11.8% and even Tipton County is 11.5%.

When people can't work they do what they have to do to feed their children & families. Obama appears totally unconcerned about the economy these days. He's more worried about giving amnesty to illegals and letting more in. Yeah, that'll help.
