does ripley need the new park?? and waste all that money?? its only going to be softball and baseball fields.. meant for huge tournaments... why would anybody in their right mind want to come to ripley for a tournament?? not enough restaurants, not enough hotels.. plus all the other cities who already have nice facilities will be competing for the same dollars!! its just a waste of tax money... better spent on our roads, and water systems.. and keeping out local taxes LOW !! falker has a nice park, so does blue mt. most churches have a softball field.. whats the point..?? theres already plenty places to go play..

why should we have to "GO" anywhere to play. Why is it a bad thing to want to grow our community.

The money from the bond issue and the tourism tax is designated for the park and cannot be used for anything else by law.

Baseball and Softball tournaments are a big thing now days, for you that has kids that enjoy sports, it makes a lot of money. Each tournament cost around 285 per tournament to play in and you have age groups from 7 to 8 and up coming to play. Plue you have the concessions and anything else. I think Ripley needs a big park as long as you have the right people running it and knows what they are doing and can bring in the tournaments like New Albany, Tupelo, Pontotoc.

thats the point.. all those other towns already experienced growth and got in on that activity , years ago.. just like you said.. they all have tournaments.. so, my question is, how will ripley sqeeze in a time slot, to host a tournamnet that the other cities havent already got in place, or will have comcurrently, thus drawing the people away from ripley's... even if you host a big tournament, guess what... where are all the people going to stay over-night??? they will have to travel back down to new albany or corinth, where the hotels are.. and it wont take them long to realize, hey, there are alot more restaurant choices in thoese other towns, 20 ,miles away... you explain to me, how once youget ALL these people here to play ball, you are going to keep them in town, and have them leave money here!! not to mention after a coupke of visits they will also realize that Ripley GAS prices are higher than all the other towns... hence, they wont be back next time a ripley hosted tournament.. good luck with it, but its a waste of money... of tax payers money!!! and also, on another comment made, the city or any government cant or is not suppose to open a private business such as (a restaurant) to compete with private citizens.. lol if that was the case, then the city of ripley, should look into buying out the mcdonalds franchise, and open up its own quick-stops as well..

OK as far as the tax payers money if it is not spent on this it will be spent somewhere else. As far as the tournaments it takes someone with the know how to organize these things. The tournaments that is played there are teams from MS, TN, MO, AR, South MS and AL who travel to all these locations to play. The reason behind this is because alot of the teams around here are tired of playing the same teams over and over so they travel out of their area to play different teams that are still USSSA. Ripley could benefit from this IF and ONLY IF they can get someone that is familiar with this and could organize it. Now if the park and fields are just going to sit and not be used then i agree REGIONS.

well, that answered how to operate the park as a big tournament event, like you said, make sure someone is in place that knows how to do it.. but... you completely bypassed the main problem i was bringing up... you mentioned all the peopel from out of state coming to play... where are all these people going to sleep??? then once they realize they have to go over to the next town to find a room, then they will also discover all the different restaurant choices they have available.. so.. back to my question.. how is this mega sports event project even if organized and ran to the best of our abilities going to bring money to the town of ripley?? no pie in the sky answers... give me some actual numbers... and common sense answers.. please..

Hey on the lodging i agree all we have pretty much is the one motel the other, Well should i say more. As for the eating most of the time people are grabbing fast food due to the time scheduling we have that. We really do need better establishments but as we are now why would anyone want to put anything else here due to the lack of people. Its not like we are a tourist attraction. So my point being is that if we could get this park and get it running maybe we will see the growth and new things coming to our area. As we are now we are still in the same shape we have been for years. Why not try something new? Talking about tax payer money is not going to help. If it dont get spent there it will get spent somewhere else. If we do or dont spend it you will be paying taxes anyway.

If you have been to New Albany recently you will see they also are constructing a massive tennis court complex across from the sports complex... if you think Ripley can keep up with New Albany at this point now in time.. you are dreaming.. citizens of Ripey would be best served, for our leaders to shut down the hospital, (just leave an emergency unit open)to be able to transport victims to a better hospital.. thats pretty much what everyone does now anyway... and forget the sports complex, put that tax money, into re-paving all our streets, and sidewalks, and making sure our water and sewer service is running smooth, and offer us all cheap, utilites, and property tax.. if we can live cheaply here, then we can just go out of town, for the restaurants, and new sports complexes... and use theirs... thats pretty much whats happening now anyway.. nothing wrong with that, as long as thy keep our living expenses low to live here.. but by raising taxes and blowing it, on wasteful prijects, its not going to keep it cheap to live here in ripley.

the people commenting on the schools, are under the impression, that the proposed ripley city park is affiliated with the South Tippah School District or Ripley Schools.. this is NOT a SCHOOL project... it is a CITY project... just wanted to clarify that. The schools have their own thing going on.

Unfortunately (at least for you) the money raised by the tourism tax and the bonds issued for the park can only be used for the park, BY LAW! BTW Kudos for our new mayor for finally getting this project going!

halarious comment... kudos indeed.. lol the park project was already up and running, with the board of aldermen finishing up the paperwork, and engineering part of the project, ready to start excepting bids.. way before the mayoral election...the new mayor had absolutely nothing to do with it.. lol and if you speak to any of the engineers that worked on the project, they will tell you , that the new park is still at least a YEAR away from being used.. minimum.. thank GOD Ripley has so many tourist though, to pay for this money pit.. lol

The project started 5 or 6 years ago while Mike Harrison was Mayor. Under him the bond issue and the tourism tax were created with the specific instructions that they were to be used ONLY for the park. It goes back to when it was going to be built out on hwy 2. You can blame the last Mayor for not following thru with project during the 4 years of his administration.

According to the latest reports, by the New Mayor, they are going to break ground in May and play ball spring 2013. That's one hell of a lot better than anything that was accomplished during the last 4 years .

In the 5 years since the bond issue and the tourism tax were passed they have accumulated over $700,000. I suppose that's just chicken feed for rich, intelligent gentleman like yourself.
