Does anyone know or have info on the cost, requirements, etc of getting your childs last name changed? Both parents agree to the change.

Im not sure how someone did it for free , but I just put in a petition to have my kids last name changed. It was a 58 and 8 dollar fee. Plus I had to send a certified letter to the non custodial parent. Though he wont get it because his address changes on a regular I was still required by law to attempt to contact him.

I TOTALLY AGREE! My surviving kids and myself have all hand names changed to my mother's maiden name for safety reasons. My oldest daughter even requested to have a new first name and I was happy to let her pick it herself. My mother is deceased since before I got married and my ex never knew her maiden name so we feel pretty safe. Safety IS often a good reason for name changes.

My husband and I would like to change my son's last name to his. His bioligical father has never been in the picture. Is this a difficult process?

Hey Anne, your husband should consider adopting your son since his bio dad is not in the picture, and if your son looks at your husband like his daddy. Adoption is a great thing, and then the last name would change automatically! If you dont want to do an adoption, then call the courthouse and talk to a clerk, they will help you! Good luck :)

. If the bio dad is paying child support but agrees to a adoption does that terminate his rights and does he get to stop paying child support.

Yes it will terminate everything. His rights and will release him from having to pay any child support because the child will no longer be his

That sounds kind of sneaky to me. Does the father have any sort of custody over the child, does he pay child support, is he involved in the childs life? If he does I can see why you would not want him to know. I agree with the one post that if you have a safety reason for doing this by all means do whatever is necessary, however, if you are just doing this because you no longer like the father or you are remarried and just want the child to have the same last name as yours, that is not right.
